Lang picks up another 2 wins by pin at New Englands
PROVIDENCE, March 8 – For Canton senior Skylar Lang, the New England wrestling championships was no different than other matches for him this season. Lang earned victories and did it with pins. Lang (220 pounds) went 2-2 at the New England tournament and won both bouts by pin.

Lang (43-3) had pins in 11 of his 14 post-season matches. He finished the year with 30 pins, second on school record list for most pins in a single season.

At the New England tournament, Lang dropped his first bout to Imran Gholizadeh of Woburn, Mass., 16-6, but Lang rebounded with a pin over Alex Kane of Wakefield, Mass., in 3:23. In his next match, Lang pinned Alex Urquhart of Hermon, Maine in 4:23. Urquhart finished second at the Maine state championship meet.

Lang was eliminated by Glastonbury’s Andrew Cavanna, 9-3. It was just third time this season that Lang wrestled six minutes. Lang’s two New England tournament losses were to medal winners. Gholizadeh finished third while Cavanna took fourth.

Lang was just the sixth Canton wrestler to compete in the New England tournament and the first since 2002 when current coach Josh Kaplan participated.

Lang takes 3rd at Open, qualifies for New England meet
NEW HAVEN, March 1 – With five pins in six matches, Canton senior Skylar Lang (220) finished third at the State Open and became the first Canton wrestler to qualify for the New England championships in 12 years. The last wrestler to compete at the New England tournament was current head coach Josh Kaplan in 2002.

Lang lost in the quarterfinals but won three straight with three pins to finish third. He now has 28 pins on the year. Senior Patrick Lawler (152) went 3-2 with a double OT and a OT victory. Dylan Houle (170) dropped two close bouts.

Lang wins Class S championship, Canton takes 10th
WILLIMANTIC, February 22 – He goes out trying for a pin in every match. In most matches, he gets it. On Saturday, Canton senior Skylar Lang had four pins in the CIAC Class S wrestling tournament and captured a state championship.

Lang pinned Griswold’s James Walsh in the final of the 220 pound weigh class in 1:13 to win state championship. “He’s a beast,” Canton coach Josh Kaplan said. “He’s big strong and athletic. He knows how to wrestle and when he wants to turn it on, he can turn it on.”

Lang (36-0) helped Canton finish 10th in the tournament and he was one of four CHS seniors who brought medals for finishing in the top six of their respective weight classes. Seniors Patrick Lawler (152) and Dylan Houle (170) each took fourth while Devin Glasson (195) took fifth. All four qualified to participate in this weekend’s State Open championships in New Haven.

Snow wipes out NCCC Tourney for 2nd straight year
AVON, Feb. 15 -- Canton had hoped to get another shot at Avon at the NCCC Tournament. With a strong core of wrestlers in the upper weights, the Warriors had hopes of perhaps grabbing the NCCC Tournament trophy.

That didn't happen. The league cancelled the tournament Friday due to a forecast of snow on Saturday afternoon. The weather forecast was accurate with 2 to 3 inches falling. League officials were concerned about the athletes getting home safely following the tournament in Avon.

“Nothing takes precedent over the safety of the kids,” said Barry Bernstein, the athletic director at Enfield High, who coordinates wrestling in the NCCC. “We were concerned about buses getting over Avon Mountain later in the day.” The 2013 NCCC Tournament was also cancelled due to a blizzard.

Avon takes command with win over Canton
AVON, Feb. 5 -- Avon extended its school-record winning streak of 50 consecutive NCCC matches with a strong 45-29 victory over Canton. The victory puts Avon in the driver’s seat to capture their seventh straight NCCC championship.

Canton, which won seven NCCC matches in one season for the first time, had hoped to get past Avon for its first victory over the Falcons since 2002. But the Warriors gave up 18 points due to three forfeits and Avon won six of the remaining 11 matches. “We had to win the close ones and we did,” Avon coach John McLaughlin said. “The kids stepped up and that was nice to see.”

Canton coach Josh Kaplan said, “It was a classic Avon vs. Canton match. Both sides came out ready to brawl. Our kids wrestled hard and our workhorses won with pins.”

Lyman beats Canton in Groundhog final
SOUTH WINDSOR, Feb. 1 – With three pins and two forfeits, Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech pulled away from Canton to win the 17th annual Groundhog Duals for the first time since 2005 with a 48-33 decision.

Dylan Houle (170), Dakota Carey (182) and Trey VandeBogart (113) had victories for the Warriors (14-8) in the final but it wasn’t enough. It was Canton’s first appearance in the finals of the Groundhog Duals.

Canton earned a spot in the championship match thanks to a thrilling 36-34 decision over host South Windsor. The host Bobcats built a 34-0 lead on the back of three pins, two forfeits and a major decision. Canton received four forfeits worth 24 points but they picked up crucial pins from Devin Glasson (195) and Skylar Lang (285) that enabled Canton to earn the two-point victory.

Canton also beat Plainville, 43-33 and East Longmeadow, Mass., 51-12 to go 3-1 on the afternoon. Patrick Lawler (152), Houle (170), Glasson (220), Lang (285) and VandeBogart (106) had pins against Plainville. Joey Joslin (138), Jake Allmendinger (145), Houle, Lang and Brian Barger (120) had pins against East Longmeadow.

Warriors win seventh league match, face undefeated Avon next
CANTON, Jan. 29 – The Canton High wrestling team won five of the eight matches on the mat to beat Suffield/Windsor Locks/East Granby Wednesday night, 42-33 to earn a school record seventh league victory. It’s the first time that Canton (11-7, 7-0 NCCC) has ever won seven league matches in a single season.

The victory sets up a match with Avon (12-6, 6-0 NCCC) for the lead in the race for the NCCC championship next Wednesday in Avon. The winner will take a huge step toward winning the league championship. Teams earn one point for each NCCC dual meet victory and a half point for every team they beat at the league championship meet on Feb. 15 in Avon. The winner of Wednesday’s meet will have to finish first or second at the NCCC Tournament to claim the NCCC championship.

Against Suffield, Skylar Lang (220) and Trey VandeBogart (106) picked wins by pin while Patrick Lawler (152) earned a hard-fought 6-4 win over Suffield’s Bruce D’Agata. Freshmen Jake Allemendinger (160) and Brian Barger (120) picked up crucial victories. Allemendinger outlasted Scott Miller, 9-2 while Barger pinned Brandon Armstrong in 3:07.

Pins help Canton win sixth league match
STAFFORD, Jan. 22 – With six wins by pin, Canton (8-4, 6-0 NCCC) beat Stafford, 60-24 on Wednesday night to remain in contention for the league championship. Joey Joslin (138), Patrick Lawler (152), Dylan Houle (170), Dakota Carey (182), Devin Glasson (195) and Skylar Lang (220) each had pins for the Warriors.

It’s only the third time that Canton has won six league matches in a single season. Canton went 6-0 when they won the NCCC championship in 2002 and went 6-1 when they finished second in the league to Avon in 2009.

Canton has two remaining NCCC matches. They host Suffield/Windsor Locks/East Granby next Wednesday night in Canton and if the Warriors can prevail, they conclude their league season at Avon on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The Suffield co-op squad and Avon have both won their first five league matches this season.

Canton's Houle, Lang win titles at Eagle Classic
MANCHESTER, Jan. 18 – Two Canton High wrestlers joined an exclusive club Saturday evening at the Eagle Classic at East Catholic High. Dylan Houle (170) and Skylar Lang (220) became just the second and third Canton wrestlers, respectively, to win a championship at the Eagle Classic.

Houle beat Newtown’s Forest Speed, 6-2 to win a championship at 170 pounds while Lang, wrestling in the finals for the second straight season, pinned RHAM’s C.J. Colletti in 2:24 to prevail at 220 pounds. They are the first Canton wrestlers to win a title at the Eagle Classic since Kacy O’Connor in 1999.

Houle and Lang’s performance helped the Warriors finish eighth in the 20th annual tournament, which was won by No. 7 Newtown. The Nighthawks, who won their first tournament this century two weeks ago at the Natick, Mass., Invitational had six wrestlers in the finals to capture a tournament for the second straight week.

Also wrestling well for Canton was Devin Glasson, who finished tied for third at 195 pounds.

Ted Moise inducted in Canton's Wall of Fame
CANTON, Oct. 4 -- Dr. Ted Moise, the third wrestler in school history to win a Class S state championship in 1983, was one of six Canton High graduates to be inducted into the Canton High Wall of Fame in October. The Wall of Fame recognizes Canton High graduates for their outstanding contributions in their field of work and/or the community.

Ted is an engineer at Texas Instruments and his team developed an ultra-lower power memory technology called ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM). It's faster, holds more data and runs on less power than any similar technology on the market today. It's considered a breakthrough that will not only make a difference in storage for consumer electronics. it could do the same for lifesaving, implantable medical devices like glucose meters and pacemakers.

Ted and five other graduates – Dave Gilchrist (1950), the late John Bahre (1950), Sally Giglio (1956), Dr. Fred Humphrey (1944) and Richard Hutchins (1977) – were recognized at the induction ceremony and dinner in the Canton Middle School cafeteria.

On the mat, Ted had a career record of 37-9-1 with 21 pins and went 24-2 his senior year (1983) at 145 pounds. He won the Class S title. He graduated from Trinity College in 1987 with a degree in physics and engineering. He earned a doctorate degree in electrical engineering from Yale in 1992.
