NEW HAVEN, Feb. 23 – Canton sent five wrestlers to the State Open wrestling tournament and came home with three victories. Ben Corbett (160), Chris Mutch (195) and Skylar Lang (220) each went 1-2 at the event with Chris VandeBogart (152) and Dylan Houle (170) each going 0-2.
Lang opened the tournament by pinning Conard’s Michael Lang in 5:51 before dropping a 5-1 decision to Class M champion Ben Morales of Ledyard and getting pinned by New Fairfield’s Ryan Tharas. Lang eventually finished sixth.
With a third period escape, Mutch earned a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Clayton Ahearn of Lyman Hall in his Open debut. Mutch lost to Somers’ Kyle Foster in his next match before getting eliminated in a 3-2 loss to Wilton’s Jared Willsey.
Corbett also opened the tournament by pinning Avon’s C.J. Delgrosse. But Corbett was pinned by Class L champion Ben Onofrio of Hand in 2:26 and was eliminated in a 5-3 overtime loss to Bethel’s Victor Viera. Trailing 3-1, Corbett got the takedown to force OT but Viera moved on after getting a takedown in OT.
Five CHS wrestlers qualify to compete at State Open
HIGGNAUM, Feb. 16 – Five Canton High wrestlers will be competing in the State Open tournament this weekend after finishing in the top six of their respective weight classes at the Class S tournament on Saturday. The five medalists helped Canton finish ninth in the tournament field of over 30 teams.
Junior Skylar Lang (220) finished second while senior Ben Corbett (160) was fourth. Seniors Chris VandeBogart (152) and Chris Mutch (195) each finished fifth while junior Dylan Houle (170) was sixth.
“We got off to a slow start in the tournament. We were a bit flat,” Canton’s second-year coach Josh Kaplan said. “We had only six guys come back (Saturday). But those guys really rallied (today).”
Lang (28-2) won three straight bouts including a 7-2 decision over No. 6 Adam Patsun of Somers in the semifinals to earn a spot in the finals. “(Skylar) has had a great year,” Kaplan said. “He’s gotten a lot more aggressive, particularly on his feet. He has been pretty tough on top.”
Lang’s first loss of the season was to Windham High’s Nick Poulin, the defending Class M champion and his opponent in the championship match. However in the finals, Poulin was able to catch Lang in a move, threw him to his back and pinned him in 37 seconds.
Corbett (31-9) finished fourth at 160 pounds. He advanced as far as the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Kharmi Thomas of Windsor Locks, 10-3. In the consolation bracket, Corbett prevailed in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Montville’s Jacob Schmalz to earn a spot in the consolation final. But Plainville’s Mischa Hoffman beat Corbett, 8-4.
Mutch (23-11) had two pins in the consolation bracket as he finished fifth. VandeBogart (18-10) had a pair of one-point decisions in the consolation bracket to remain alive in the tournament. After dropping his first match of the tournament, Houle (22-11) won three straight matches in the consolation bracket with two pins.
It was Canton’s best finish in Class S since finishing 10th in 2010. Lang was the first Warrior finalist since Nate Getler won a state title in 2011.
NCCC Tournament cancelled
AVON, Feb. 11 – The Blizzard of 2013 was too much and too deep. The blizzard that left up to 30 inches of snow across the state over the weekend has forced the cancellation of the 2013 NCCC Tournament.
The tournament was moved to Monday in Avon. But school was cancelled in most towns since they couldn’t clear the roads well enough to safely get students to school. A further delay would have impacted preparations for the upcoming state tournament on Friday and it isn’t clear if all league schools will be open on Tuesday either.
It is the first time that the league tournament has been cancelled. Avon, due to its 7-0 dual meet record, was declared as the league champion.
Dual meet season ends with loss to Avon
CANTON, Feb. 6 – Patrick Lawler (152), Skylar Lang (220) and Mike Schomburg (106) each won by pin while Ben Corbett (160) and Chris Mutch (195) picked up decisions but Avon was too strong in a 48-25 victory in the dual meet season finale for both teams. Avon extended its NCCC winning streak to 42 straight matches. The Falcons (16-9, 7-0 NCCC) haven’t dropped a league contest since 2007.
Canton tops Suffield for 11th win of season

Lang falls in final, Canton takes 6th
at Eagle Classic
MANCHESTER, Jan. 19 – Skylar Lang became just the seventh wrestler in Canton history to earn a spot in the finals at the Eagle Classic with a pair of victories at 220 pounds. But Windham High’s Nick Poulin spoiled Lang’s quest to become just the second Canton wrestler to win a title in the tournament with a pin.
Canton had five wrestlers finish in the top four of their respective weight classes as the Warriors finished sixth at the 19th annual Eagle Classic – its best finish since taking fifth in 2002. With five individual champions and seven finalists, No. 7 Windham High won the tournament for the second year in row over South Windsor, 229-158½. The Bobcats finished second for the fourth time in the last five years.
Ben Corbett (160) and Dylan Houle (170) each finished third while Chris VandeBogart (152) and Chris Mutch (195) each finished fourth.
