Three wrestlers get a win at State Open
NEW HAVEN, Feb. 23 – Canton sent five wrestlers to the State Open wrestling tournament and came home with three victories. Ben Corbett (160), Chris Mutch (195) and Skylar Lang (220) each went 1-2 at the event with Chris VandeBogart (152) and Dylan Houle (170) each going 0-2.

Lang opened the tournament by pinning Conard’s Michael Lang in 5:51 before dropping a 5-1 decision to Class M champion Ben Morales of Ledyard and getting pinned by New Fairfield’s Ryan Tharas. Lang eventually finished sixth.

With a third period escape, Mutch earned a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Clayton Ahearn of Lyman Hall in his Open debut. Mutch lost to Somers’ Kyle Foster in his next match before getting eliminated in a 3-2 loss to Wilton’s Jared Willsey.

Corbett also opened the tournament by pinning Avon’s C.J. Delgrosse. But Corbett was pinned by Class L champion Ben Onofrio of Hand in 2:26 and was eliminated in a 5-3 overtime loss to Bethel’s Victor Viera. Trailing 3-1, Corbett got the takedown to force OT but Viera moved on after getting a takedown in OT.

Five CHS wrestlers qualify to compete at State Open
HIGGNAUM, Feb. 16 – Five Canton High wrestlers will be competing in the State Open tournament this weekend after finishing in the top six of their respective weight classes at the Class S tournament on Saturday. The five medalists helped Canton finish ninth in the tournament field of over 30 teams.

Junior Skylar Lang (220) finished second while senior Ben Corbett (160) was fourth. Seniors Chris VandeBogart (152) and Chris Mutch (195) each finished fifth while junior Dylan Houle (170) was sixth.

“We got off to a slow start in the tournament. We were a bit flat,” Canton’s second-year coach Josh Kaplan said. “We had only six guys come back (Saturday). But those guys really rallied (today).”

Lang (28-2) won three straight bouts including a 7-2 decision over No. 6 Adam Patsun of Somers in the semifinals to earn a spot in the finals. “(Skylar) has had a great year,” Kaplan said. “He’s gotten a lot more aggressive, particularly on his feet. He has been pretty tough on top.”

Lang’s first loss of the season was to Windham High’s Nick Poulin, the defending Class M champion and his opponent in the championship match. However in the finals, Poulin was able to catch Lang in a move, threw him to his back and pinned him in 37 seconds.

Corbett (31-9) finished fourth at 160 pounds. He advanced as far as the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Kharmi Thomas of Windsor Locks, 10-3. In the consolation bracket, Corbett prevailed in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Montville’s Jacob Schmalz to earn a spot in the consolation final. But Plainville’s Mischa Hoffman beat Corbett, 8-4.

Mutch (23-11) had two pins in the consolation bracket as he finished fifth. VandeBogart (18-10) had a pair of one-point decisions in the consolation bracket to remain alive in the tournament. After dropping his first match of the tournament, Houle (22-11) won three straight matches in the consolation bracket with two pins.

It was Canton’s best finish in Class S since finishing 10th in 2010. Lang was the first Warrior finalist since Nate Getler won a state title in 2011.

NCCC Tournament cancelled
AVON, Feb. 11 – The Blizzard of 2013 was too much and too deep. The blizzard that left up to 30 inches of snow across the state over the weekend has forced the cancellation of the 2013 NCCC Tournament.

The tournament was moved to Monday in Avon. But school was cancelled in most towns since they couldn’t clear the roads well enough to safely get students to school. A further delay would have impacted preparations for the upcoming state tournament on Friday and it isn’t clear if all league schools will be open on Tuesday either.

It is the first time that the league tournament has been cancelled. Avon, due to its 7-0 dual meet record, was declared as the league champion.

Dual meet season ends with loss to Avon
CANTON, Feb. 6 – Patrick Lawler (152), Skylar Lang (220) and Mike Schomburg (106) each won by pin while Ben Corbett (160) and Chris Mutch (195) picked up decisions but Avon was too strong in a 48-25 victory in the dual meet season finale for both teams. Avon extended its NCCC winning streak to 42 straight matches. The Falcons (16-9, 7-0 NCCC) haven’t dropped a league contest since 2007.

Canton tops Suffield for 11th win of season
SUFFIELD, Jan. 30 – Due to plenty of forfeits, there were just five actual matches but Canton won three in a 42-32 decision over Suffield. Noah Korner (138) and Skylar Lang (220) earned victories while Chris VandeBogart (152) won with a pin. With the victory, Canton improves to 11-8 on the season and 4-2 in the NCCC. Dylan Houle (170) picked up a pin against Goda Andrews of Windsor Locks.

Canton wins two, finishes 5th at Highlander Duals
PORTLAND, Jan. 26 – Canton went 2-2 and finished fifth at the Highlander Duals in Portland, sparked by Skylar Lang, who went 4-0 at 220 pounds with three pins. The Warriors (10-8) beat defending Class S champion Old Saybrook/Westbrook, 45-33 and host Portland, 54-30. Canton lost to No. 3 Farmington, 69-6 and Oxford, 46-21. Farmington won the tournament.

Noah Korner (138), Ben Corbett (160), Dylan Houle (170) and Devon Glasson (182) had pins for Canton in the win over Portland while Trey VandeBogart (103) won by injury default. Three forfeits from Portland aided the Warriors.

Against OSW, Chris VandeBogart (152), Skylar Lang (220) and Glasson (182) won with pins while Corbett earned a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Cory Vondessel. Four OSW forfeits also helped Canton.

Chris Mutch (195) earned a 6-0 decision against Oxford while Lang (220) won another match by pin. Lang scored Canton’s only points against Farmington with a win.

Lang falls in final, Canton takes 6th
at Eagle Classic
MANCHESTER, Jan. 19 – Skylar Lang became just the seventh wrestler in Canton history to earn a spot in the finals at the Eagle Classic with a pair of victories at 220 pounds. But Windham High’s Nick Poulin spoiled Lang’s quest to become just the second Canton wrestler to win a title in the tournament with a pin.

Canton had five wrestlers finish in the top four of their respective weight classes as the Warriors finished sixth at the 19th annual Eagle Classic – its best finish since taking fifth in 2002. With five individual champions and seven finalists, No. 7 Windham High won the tournament for the second year in row over South Windsor, 229-158½. The Bobcats finished second for the fourth time in the last five years.

Ben Corbett (160) and Dylan Houle (170) each finished third while Chris VandeBogart (152) and Chris Mutch (195) each finished fourth. Corbett went 3-1 in the tournament while Houle was 4-1 with two pins. VandeBogart won three straight bouts in the consolation bracket to earn a spot in the consolation final.

Canton gets four pins in loss to Somers
CANTON, Jan. 16 – Ben Corbett (160), Dylan Houle (170), Skylar Lang (220) and Quinten Permenter (285) won with pins but it wasn’t enough as Somers (12-4, 3-1 NCCC) beat the Warriors, 45-26. Giving up three forfeits and 18 points didn’t help the Warrior effort. Devin Glasson (182) did pick up a win against a one-man team from Stafford. Canton is now 7-6 and 3-2 in the league.

Delos sets state record; Canton picks up three victories
CANTON, Jan. 12 – Canton's Dan Delos had two pins including a pin in six seconds against Seymour that set a new state record for the fastest pin at 182 pounds as Canton (7-5) won three of four matches on Saturday at the high school.

Delos pinned Seymour’s Mike Petrowski in six seconds to set the state record at 182 pounds – a new weight class in its second year. Delos also tied the Canton school record for fastest pin. In 2002, Adam Szychowski had a six-second pin at 215 pounds.

On Saturday, Canton beat Seymour, 45-36, Gilbert, 45-21 and Weston, 46-36. The only blemish on the schedule was a 54-27 loss to Derby. Skylar Lang (220) went 4-0 on the day with three pins and a forfeit. Ben Corbett (160) was 4-0 with a pin, two decisions and a forfeit while teammate Quinten Permenter was 4-0 with three pins and a decision. Delos was 3-0 with two pins and a forfeit. Dylan Houle (170) was 4-1 with two pins.

Canton tops Enfield for fourth win
ENFIELD, Jan. 10 -- Against Enfield, Canton prevailed, 47-21. Due to forfeits on both teams, there were only seven actual matches and the Warriors (4-4, 3-1 NCCC) won five of them. Joey Joslin (132), Ben Corbett (160), Dylan Houle (170) and Dan Delos (182) won by pin. Julian Adams (113) won by technical fall with a 15-point win.

Warriors earn win with six pins
HARTFORD, Jan. 8 -- The Warriors (3-4, 2-1 NCCC) traveled to Hartford and beat SMSA by a 57-12 score with six pins, four in under one minute. Skylar Lang (120), Noah Korner (138), Chris VandeBogart (152) and Dan Delos (170) each won by pin in less than a minute. Delos pinned his opponent in 12 seconds. Corbett (160) and Mutch (195) also won with pins while Mike Schomburg (113) earned a hard-fought 13-7 decision. Canton faces Enfield on Thursday on the road.

Canton takes 2nd at Northwestern
BARKHAMSTED, Jan. 5 -- At the Northwestern Invitational, the host Highlanders set up a round robin tournament in each weight class to enable each wrestler to get up to five matches. Round robin tournament are common at the youth wrestling level but rare in high school.

Teams earned points for each win and pin by individual wrestlers. Plainville won the event with 136 points while Canton was second with 109. E.O. Smith was third with 92 points.

Dylan Houle (160) and Skylar Lang (220) each went 4-0 to win their respective weight classes. Devon Glasson (182) was second with a 4-1 record along with teammates Joey Joslin (132, 4-1), Chris VandeBogart (152, 4-1), Ben Corbett (160, 4-1) and Quintin Parmenter (285, 3-1).

Canton rallies past Bears for 2nd win
GRANBY, Jan. 3 – Trailing by 16 points after the first three matches, Canton won five of the remaining six contests to earn its second win of the season with a 46-19 decision over Granby. Dylan Houle (160) and Devin Glasson (182) won with pins while Patrick Lawler (152), Ben Corbett (170), Chris Mutch (195) each earned decisions to lift the Warriors (2-4, 1-1 NCCC). The Warriors took advantage of the fact that Granby (0-3, 0-2 NCCC) gave up 18 points in forfeits.

Warriors earn first win of the season
WATERBURY, Dec. 22 – Chris Mutch (195 pounds) had three wins and two pins while Ben Corbett (170) had two pins as the Warriors participated in a four-team meet. Canton (1-4) earned its first win of the season with a 54-12 victory over Holy Cross and came close to its second with a 42-40 loss to Nonnewaug. Haddam-Killingworth beat Canton, 66-18 with Mutch earning the only Warrior victory in the match.

Against Holy Cross, Canton received four pins from Mutch, Mike Amoroso (220), Quinten Permenter (285) and Corbett. Five forfeits from Holy Cross didn’t hurt, either.

Against Nonnewaug, each team received three forfeits reducing the match to eight bouts. Each team won four but the difference was that Nonnewaug had four pins and Canton had three pins and a decision, allowing the Chiefs to outscore Canton on the mat, 24-22. Jakai Bennett (138), Patrick Lawler (152) and Lawlor had the pins for Canton.
