Kaplan finishes 4th
in State Open
GLASTONBURY, Feb. 23 -- Josh Kaplan (140) dropped a tough 9-4 decision to RHAM's Louie Grano in the quarterfinals but battled through the consolation bracket with three straight wins to earn a berth in the consolation final. One of the wins was an 8-5 win over Derby's Rob French in a rematch of the Class S final that Kaplan had won a week earlier.

But it was a frustrating defeat for Kaplan, who was pinned by New Milford's Sean Caselli in 3:52. Leading 4-0 in the third period, Caselli caught Kaplan in a moment's weakness and took his down and quickly turned him to his back.
When it was over, Kaplan was furious because he said that Caselli had intentionally poked him in the eye as he pinned him.

But in the end, Kaplan was fourth in the state and had a ticket to the New England Tournament.

"He finished in the top four and that says a lot," Phelps said. "He got caught (in a move) against the kid from New Fairfield and split with Grano [who eventually finished second]. It was tough for Josh when he lost Tom [Bujold to separated shoulder]. Tom was at his level to push him all the time. Those two would beat on each other in practice to get stronger."

Kaplan spent a lot of time in the final weeks of the season training with long-time assistant coach Ed deSimas.

"Josh likes to drill and Ed likes to drill so they work well together," Phelps said.

Canton's Adam Szychowski (215) was eliminated from the Open in the consolation quarterfinals, dropping a 4-3, double OT decision to Class S champion Aaron Cramer of Morgan.  Canton's David Brummert (103) and Stephen Babcock (275) were each 1-2 in the tournament.

NEW ENGLAND: At the New England Tournament, Kaplan went 1-1 in the tournament, also winning his first match with a 7-0 win over Brandon Scott of Cranston East, R.I. but losing to Dave Provencher of Lowell, Mass., 7-2 in the first round.

BERLIN, Feb. 16 -- Josh Kaplan (140) captured the 13th state championship in team history with a dominating performance in the Class S championships. Canton finished fifth in the tournament. David Brummert (2nd, 103), Adam Szychowski (3rd, 215) and Stephen Babcock (4th, 275) each qualified for the State Open.

GRANBY, Feb. 9 --- Josh Kaplan (140) won his third straight NCCC championship while Canton finished second to clinch its fourth NCCC championship. Josh Bristol (119) also won for Canton. Avon won seven of eight matches in the final to erase a 10-point deficit and win the tournament.

Warriors outlast Holy Cross, beat NW to set win record
CANTON, Feb. 7 -- On Senior Night, Josh Kaplan set a new single-season record for takedowns as the Warriors swept a pair from Holy Cross and Northwestern Regional. Kaplan had five takedowns to break the single-season mark of 82 set by Kacy O'Connor in 1999

Key pins from David Brummert (103), Josh Bristol (119) and Chris Ziemba (135) lifted the Warriors past Cross for the first time since 1997 with a 39-36 victory. In the second match of the evening, Canton had eight pins and won 12 of 14 bouts to beat Northwestern Regional, 72-12.

Canton finishes with a school-record 22 wins in one season. Seniors Josh Feldman (130), Ziemna, Tom Bujold (135), Kaplan (140), Justin Iskra (145), Sam Junno (152), Courtney Hill (160), Chris Palozie (171), Bill Story (171), Mike Grafstein (189), Adam Szychowski (215) and Stephen Babcock (275) were honored.

Canton completes undefeated season in league
EAST WINDSOR, Jan. 30 -- The Warriors improved to 17-4 and a perfect 6-0 in the league with a 44-36 win over East Windsor. The last time that Canton went undefeated in the league was in 1997 when they were 4-0 and won the NCCC title.

Warriors 4th in Rockville Duals,
Bujold out for the season
VERNON, Jan. 26 --- Adam Szychowski (215) won four matches, three by pin, as Canton (16-4) finished fourth in the Rockville Duals.

David Brummert (103) had four wins including two pins. Canton beat Morgan, 42-37, clinching the match on back-to-back pins by Brummert and Stephen Babcock (275). The Warriors beat Coventry, 81-0, before falling to No. 8 RHAM, 59-15. Rockville beat Canton, 48-31 to finish third.

CHS senior Tom Bujold (135) ended his career with a pair of pins against Morgan and Coventry. Bujold, one of four captains, broke his collarbone in the first period against RHAM's Brendan Riley and is out for the season. Bujold finishes the season 23-5 with 10 pins and a career record of 71-42 with 32 pins.

Canton remains undefeated in league by topping Stafford
CANTON, Jan. 23 --- Eight wrestlers pinned as Canton won its 14th match of the season with a 56-21 NCCC victory over Stafford. The Warriors (14-2) remain in command of the NCCC race with a 5-0 record. Josh Kaplan (145) fought off his back to come back and win by pin and earn his 23rd win of the season.

Kaplan, Szychowski each take second in Eagle Classic
MANCHESTER, Jan. 19 -- Josh Kaplan (140) suffered his first loss of the season, losing to Ben Lackey of Mount Anthony, the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the nation, in the finals of Saturday's Eagle Classic. Kaplan slipped to 22-1.

Adam Szychowski (215) finished second after reaching the finals with three pins. Steve Babcock (275) finished fourth while Tom Bujold (135) took sixth. Canton finished an impressive sixth in the field of 20 teams.

Warriors rally to slip past Nonnewaug in a thriller
CANTON, Jan. 16 --- In a thrilling match, Chris Palozie (171) escaped in double overtime to earn a 8-7 victory and give Canton a 35-31 win over Nonnewaug (17-5). Palozie escaped and got a takedown as time ran out in the third period to force overtime.

Canton (13-2) trailed the Chiefs by 12 points, 28-16 but after Tom Bujold (140) earned a major decision, Josh Kaplan (145) and Sam Junno (152) pinned, Canton had a 32-28 lead. Nonnewaug's Andrew Walker (160) slipped past Courtney Hill, 4-1 to set up the final bout  --- Palozie vs. Jon Ronalter at 171. It was only Canton's second win over the Chiefs since 1988. The Warriors had last beaten Nonnewaug in 1995.

Warriors undefeated in league
ENFIELD, Jan. 10 -- Canton improved to 12-2 and 4-0 in the NCCC with a 50-29 victory over winless Enfield (0-13). Tom Bujold (140) and Josh Kaplan (145) pinned for the Warriors, who remain in first place in the league.

Thrilling win over Avon for CHS
ROCKY HILL, Jan. 5 --- Canton rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat Avon, 39-36 and take the lead in the NCCC championship race Saturday in a thrilling match. Canton (10-2, 2-0 NCCC) beat the Falcons for the first time since 1997 -- the last time that the Warriors won a league championship.

Avon (10-5, 3-1 NCCC) won five of the first seven bouts of the match that began at 145 pounds to take a 28-12 lead. Canton's David Brummert (103) rallied from a 6-3 deficit to beat Avon's Sebastain Lora, 8-6 to cut the lead to 13 before Canton's Brian Phelps stunned Joel Hava at 112 pounds.

Hava led 10-5 after one period with five takedowns. But Phelps caught Hava in a headlock and pinned him in the second period to cut the Avon lead to seven, 28-21. At 119, Canton's Josh Bristol rallied from an early 4-2 deficit to pin Reid Time and pull Canton within one point, 28-27.

Avon lost one team point when Rob Tolk was penalized for not having his shoelaces taped, as required by regulations. But Tolk (125) still pinned Anthony Daniels to give the Falcons a six-point lead, 33-27.

At 130, Canton's Chris Ziemba got a reversal in the final 30 seconds tie his match with Adam Freilich at 2-2. But Freilich prevailed when Zimeba was penalized one point for locking hands and Avon led, 36-27.

Canton pulled within three thanks to a forfeit at 135 pounds and won the match on a Tom Bujold (140) pin. It was the closest match ever between the two schools.

In other matches Saturday, Rocky Hill nipped the Warriors by one, 39-38 while Canton whipped Bacon Academy, 64-18.

Warriors improve to 7-1
PLYMOUTH, Dec. 29 -- Canton pinned in seven of the eight matches it contested against Terryville in a 53-30 win over the Kangaroos to improve to 7-1.  Sam Junno (152) had the fastest pin of the day (32 seconds) in Canton's 66-12 win over Lyman Memorial where the Warriors pinned eight times.
