Young team still growing
By GERRY deSIMAS, JR.
Connecticut Wrestling Online
CANTON. Jan. 22, 2001 -- In the early weeks of the 2000-01 campaign, the difference between winning and losing was modest for the Canton High wrestling team.

Two forfeits a match didn't hurt nor did an upset loss as the Warriors leapt out to a 7-1 start  its best start since 1994-95 when Canton finished second in the Class S championships.

Canton beat Montville High for the first time in school history, notched only its sixth win ever against Gilbert in 25 matches and beat Farmington for the first time since 1993.

The Warriors also finished fourth in the Derby Invitational with senior Zack Gurski (275) and junior Josh Kaplan (135) winning titles. Sophomore David Brummert (103) was third with junior Adam Szychowski (215) taking an impressive second-place finish.

However, in their next seven matches, the Warriors saw the margin between winning and losing shrink drastically. Two forfeits a match hurt. Upset losses were backbreakers along with wrestlers getting caught and pinned, giving up six points for a pin instead of just a three-point loss by decision.

Nonnewaug nipped Canton by three, 40-37; Enfield won 41-36, Rocky Hill prevailed, 40-33 and Bacon Academy beat the Warriors, 40-33

Canton dropped five of seven matches to slip to 8-6 at the midway point of the season.

"They're still young and inexperienced," said Canton coach Bill Phelps, now in his 18th season as head coach. "They're getting good experience and they are wrestling good wrestlers and getting tougher."

Four medalwinners from last year's Class S tournament squad returned including Gurski (2nd at 275), Kaplan (5th at 135), junior Tom Bujold (6th at 130) and senior Jack Palozie (6th at 171).

Gurski and Kaplan have been outstanding, each only losing once. Gurski is 17-1 while Kaplan is 16-1. Bujold has been solid at 130 with a 13-5 mark while Palozie is 11-5 at 171.

Szychowski has been a pleasant surprise at 215. In only his second varsity season, he has gotten off to a 14-2 start. A year ago, he was 12-13. Brummert is 11-3 at 103 in his second varsity campaign. A year ago, he had 14 wins in 35 matches.

Mike Grafstein (189) has been solid with a 10-7 record. The junior grappler was 6-24 a year ago.

"This is a team where I will go home and have a sleepless night," Phelps said. "Four of our losses have been within one match.

"Sometimes I forget they are young," Phelps admitted. "I get ticked off when one of our kids is leading 15-6 with 10 seconds left, gets reversed and pinned with one second to go.

"But we have high expectations with this group. If we don't set the expectations high, they don't have goals to shoot for."

Canton (8-6, 1-2 NCCC) is looking for its first winning season in three years. While it isn't likely that they can contend for the NCCC championship, Phelps is looking for his team to return to the top 10 in Class S, maybe into the top 5 with some luck.

"These kids have talent and their hungry," he said. "They haven't turned the corner yet. But it is beginning to make sense to them. They'll gel. They love to be down there (at practice). They have the heart and desire."

MAT DUST -- Canton will host the NCCC championship tournament on Saturday, Feb. 10. ... Gurski has the chance to become the only wrestler in school history to win four straight conference titles at the NCCC meet.
Greg Erisoty
(1977-79) won three straight Northwest Conference titles while Dan Langer (1992-94) and Justin Gavry (1993-95) each won three straight NCCC crowns.  ... Assistant coach Ed deSimas is back behind the bench for his 16th season. ... Canton was scheduled to compete in the Eagle Classic at East Catholic but was one of four schools to not make the trip due to slippery road conditions. ... Kaplan set a new school record last year with 32 wins, the most for a sophomore in the program's history. Kaplan was 32-9 last year.
