n Coach: Mario Bonito (1st year at Canton, 12th year overall)
n Last year: 10-21, 2-5 NCCC; 3rd NCCC Tournament; 10th Class S tournament
Key losses: Steve Carpenter (125, 2nd Class S, 39-5), Matt Grisevich (130, 33-9); Rich Jones (160, 5th Class S, 42-4)
Top wrestlers: Senior
Nate Getler (41-6, 1st NCCC, 3rd Class S); Junior Bryan Fitzpatrick (13-11), Matt White (30-8, 1st NCCC, 4th Class S)
Outlook: Getler, Fitzpatrick and White are the most experienced wrestlers returning this year and all three should challenge for NCCC titles. Getler is looking for his first state title. There are just 16 wrestlers out for the team, which could make it challenging to field a full team in 14 weight classes. The remainder of the team is enthusiastic but lacks significant varsity experience.
Of note: Bonito, who coached 11 years in New York state from 1985-96, replaces Bill Phelps, who coached Canton for 28 years.
NEW HAVEN, Feb. 26 – Nate Getler, Canton’s most recent state wrestling champion, finished his career with a 2-2 record at the 2011 State Open championships at the New Haven Athletic Center. Getler (38-3) had two pins and a pair of close defeats at 130 pounds.
Getler opened the tournament by pinning Newington’s Braden McManus in 1:08 but he lost 2-1 to Bacon Academy’s Sean McAllister in the quarterfinals. McAllister made a first period takedown stand up.
In the first round of the consolation round, Getler pinned Thomaston’s Jeff Desaultels in 54 seconds. But in the consolation semifinals, New Milford’s Andrew Golden outlasted Getler, 3-1 in overtime to eliminate the Canton wrestler.
Golden took a 1-0 lead with a second period escape but Getler tied it with 1:08 left in the match with an escape of his own. Getler tried to secure a takedown and came close with 18 seconds remaining but the two wrestlers were ruled out of bounds. In overtime, Getler tried a throw but Golden was able to slip out of it and behind Getler to get the takedown and the victory.
Matt White (125) was scheduled to wrestle but he was overweight on Friday and could not participate. Bryan Fitzpatrick (135), who finished fifth at the Class S tournament, was an alternate and grabbed an available spot in the tournament. Fitzpatrick (25-12) lost a pair of matches to eventual runnerup Forest Dolby of Cheney Tech by pin (25 seconds) and to Fairfield Warde’s James Namontis by a 9-2 score.
Journey complete as Getler captures Class S state title
HARTFORD, Feb. 19 – It’s been a long journey for Canton High senior Nate Getler in his quest for a wrestling state championship. As a freshman, he lost in the semifinals of the Class S tournament. As a sophomore, he won 29 of his first 30 matches before severely injuring his knee. He returned as a junior and lost in the Class S semifinals before finishing third.
This year, he broke through. With his sixth straight pin of the post-season, Getler (36-1) became the first Canton wrestler to win a state title since 2004 by pinning Nonnewaug’s Austin Hodges in 2:33 in the finals at 130 pounds.
Getler helped Canton finish 12th in the field of 34 teams at the Class S meet. Junior teammate Matt White (125) finished second, falling to defending State Open champion Tyler Tilbe of Nonnewaug while Canton sophomore Bryan Fitzpatrick finished fifth at 135 pounds.
ENFIELD, Feb. 12 – Victories have been sparse for the Canton High wrestling team this winter. With a young team and a small roster, the Warriors went 6-19 in the regular season and 1-6 in the NCCC.
But first-year coach Mario Bonito was confident that the Warriors would be stronger in the postseason. With three individual champions and six medalwinners, Canton finished fourth at Saturday’s NCCC championship tournament.
Senior Nate Getler (135) continued to dominate with a pair of victories including a pin over Suffield’s Dan D’Ostuni in the final to win his second straight NCCC title while junior Matt White (125) won his third consecutive league championship. Wrestling up two weight classes, junior Byran Fitzpatrick (135) won his first league title.
“We’re more of a tournament team,” Bonito said. “We have three or four kids who are very strong and the other kids are starting to improve. It’s all adding up.”
Getler (32-1) pinned D’Ostuni in 3:00 to win his championship
White won his third in a row at the buzzer. Leading 9-8 in the third period, White was penalized one point for blocking the airway of Stafford’s Roshawn Rehman. But White was able to tilt Rehman for a pair of near fall points as the third period ended for a 11-9 victory. White improves to 30-4 and becomes the sixth Canton wrestler to win three NCCC championships.
Fitzpatrick (21-8) spent the entire season wrestling at 125 and 130. But with White and Getler in the lineup, he moved up to 135. “He’s a good wrestler,” Bonito said. “He doesn’t realize how good he is. He was concerned about the weight issue but I told him he would fine.”
With three pins, including a pin of Dan D’Ostuni, Fitzpatrick won his first conference title. He’ll wrestle at 135 in this weekend’s Class S championship.
Sophomore Ben Corbett (152) finished second after being pinned by Avon’s Joe Murphy. Chris VandeBogart (140) finished third while sophomore Chris Mutch (171) went 2-2 to finish fourth.
Getler wins 30th match on Sr. Night
AVON, February 8 – Senior Night may have been in an opposing gymnasium but it still felt like home to Canton’s Nate Getler. In his final regular season match of his career, Getler easily won by tech fall with a 15-0 victory over Avon’s Brennan Neserella to improve to 30-1 on the season.
Avon (14-8, 7-0 NCCC) earned its 27th straight league victory with a 60-17 win over Canton. Six Warrior forfeits and three pins carried the Falcons to the victory.
Matt White (125) put Canton on the board with a pin in 2:40 and Bryan Fitzpatrick followed with a hard-fought 6-0 win over Peter Suter at 130 pounds. Konnor Claywell (145) had a takedown with 20 seconds left in regulation to beat Nick Gerali, 5-4.
Getler was honored on Senior Night before the match, which had been scheduled in Canton for Monday. But when a Canton girls basketball game against Amistad Academy was postponed on Saturday, the game was rescheduled for Monday, forcing the wrestling team on the road. The match was shifted to Tuesday but the Canton boys basketball team already had a game scheduled at home so the match remained in Avon.
Canton finishes the regular season with a record of 6-19 and 1-6 in the league.
Senior night moved to Avon
CANTON – For the second time, Canton's match with Avon has been moved. The Warriors' match with Avon was rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at Avon High. On Monday, the match was moved to Tuesday evening at Avon. The host Falcons have agreed to have Senior Night festivities to honor Canton's Nate Getler (130) before the match.
Originally, the match against Avon was scheduled for January 26 in Canton but due to snow, it was postponed until Monday, Feb. 7. But when the girls basketball program's game with Amistad Academy of New Haven on Saturday, Feb. 5 was postponed due to the forecast for rain, snow and ice, the wrestling team was bumped from the gym so Canton could host Amistad.
Canton has had three home meets this season against Stafford (Jan. 24), Somers (Dec. 15) and East Windsor (Dec. 22).
Warriors outlast Granby for 6th win
GRANBY, Feb. 3 – Pins from Hunter Lang (171), Matt White (130) and Chris Vandebogart (140) helped Canton earn its sixth win of the season with a 41-24 victory over Granby. Nate Getler (135) also picked up a win by technical fall as Canton won four of the seven matches contested on the mat. Canton improves to 6-18 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Warriors win one of five matches in week
CANTON, Jan. 30 -- The Warriors (5-18, 0-5 NCCC) won one of five matches last week. They dropped a 51-21 decision to Stafford in a NCCC meet. Brian Fitzpatrick (130) had a nice overtime win but four forfeits didn’t help Canton.
At the John Williams Duals at Rockville High on Saturday, Canton finished seventh. The Warriors lost to Windham High, 58-10, Avon, 60-18 and host Rockville, 30-29. Canton beat the Junior Varsity All-Stars, a collection of junior varsity wrestlers from the seven varsity teams to replace a team that failed to appear, by a score of 51-18.
Getler takes 2nd
at Eagle Classic
MANCHESTER, Jan. 22 -- Canton’s Nate Getler (130) made a mistake Saturday in the finals of the 17th annual Eagle Classic in Manchester and Windham High sophomore Miguel Calixto made him pay for it.
In one quick series of moves, Calixto scored a two-point reversal and put Getler on his back to pin him in 3:13 and hand the Canton grappler his first loss of the season in the championship bout at 130 pounds.
With two pins, Getler advanced to the semifinals where he outlasted Nonnewaug’s Austin Hodges, 11-2. His match with Calixto, who won 50 matches as a freshman, captured a Class M championship and took third at the State Open and New England tournaments, was scoreless into the second period.
Matt White (125) went 3-2 in the tournament as Canton finished 13th in the field of 21 teams.
Enfield outlasts CHS
ENFIELD, January 19 -- The Warriors fell to 4-14 and 0-4 in the NCCC last week after a 48-32 loss to Enfield. White (125), Brian Fitzpatrick (130) and Getler each had pins for Canton while Ben Corbett (152) had a 2-0 win in overtime. Five forfeits didn’t help the Canton cause.
Canton has tough time filling all 14 weight classes
DERBY, Jan. 15 -- Canton is struggling in dual meets. The Warriors squad is small with only about 15 wrestlers leaving some holes and forfeits in the lineup. It is a lineup with a diverse array of talent.
Senior Nate Getler (135 pounds) was undefeated through Saturday with an 18-0 record with wins against Derby, Gilbert and Seymour. Junior Matt White (125) and Brian Fitzpatrick (125/130) have been wrestling well along with Ben Corbett (152) and Erik Latvis (189). Getler kept his undefeated record with an escape in triple overtime in a dual meet with Gilbert last week.
Canton (4-13, 0-3 NCCC) scored 30 points in losses to Gilbert, 48-30, and Seymour, 39-30. They were also beaten by Derby, 60-24.
There are other wrestlers who are young and enthusiastic but inexperienced. “We’re telling the kids don’t worry about the team record. Things will take care of themselves,” first-year coach Mario Bonito said. “We’re more of a tournament team. Our main goal is to wrestle, wrestle and get experience on the varsity or junior varsity level,” he said.
Getler wins Derby title for third time
DERBY, Dec. 18 – Senior Nate Getler and junior Matt White held off desperate last-second rallies to win championships at the 21st annual Derby Invitational on Saturday. Getler won his third straight Derby title with a 7-5 victory over Gilbert’s Alek Smith in the finals at 135 pounds.
Getler prevented Smith from getting a match-tying takedown in the final seconds to secure the win. Getler’s performance earned the tournament’s outstanding wrestler award. He is just the sixth wrestler in the tournament's history to have won a title three or more times.
White won his second straight Derby Invitational title with a 5-4 win over Housatonic’s Dom Ghi. White continually thwarted Ghi’s attempts to switch throughout the match.
Canton finished eighth in the field of nine teams with just six wrestlers due to injuries and wrestlers needing to be certified to wrestle at their respective weight classes. Sophomore Ben Corbett did well, taking third at 152 pounds while junior Eric Latvis finished fourth at 189 pounds.
Forfeits cost Canton in loss to Somers
CANTON, Dec. 15 – On the mat, the Warriors did well in their season opening match against the defending Class S champions. Canton won four of five matches with four pins. But six forfeits hurt in a 42-36 loss to Somers. Brian Fitzpatrick (130), Ben Corbett (152), Skylar Lang (150) and Erik Latvis (189) each won by pin for the Warriors (0-1, 0-1 NCCC) with Fitzpatrick winning in 31 seconds.
New era begins with Warriors
CANTON, Dec. 13 -- It’s a transition season at Canton after coach Bill Phelps stepped down after 28 years behind the bench last spring. The Warriors hired Mario Benito, a head coach for 11 years in New York State. Defending NCCC champions Nate Getler (135/140), Brian Fitzpatrick (112/119) and Matt White (119/125) are the most experienced wrestlers returning. Getler, who severely injured his knee was a sophomore, is aiming for a state championship. He was 41-6 a year ago. White went 30-8.
Canton has just 16 wrestlers out for the team, which will make it challenging to fill the 14 weight classes. Long-time assistant Ed deSImas, who has been honored as NCCC assistant coach of the year three times in the last six years, was retained and begins his 27th season behind the bench with Canton.
Our 10th year of wrestling coverage begins in December
CANTON, Oct. 27 – Canton Wrestling Online is pleased to begin its 10th year of coverage this winter of the Canton High wrestling team. This website and our award-winning sister site Connecticut Wrestling Online are the two oldest high school wrestling websites in the state.
Canton's season opens on Wednesday, Dec. 15 when they host defending Class S champion Somers at 6 p.m. at the high school.
