Cotton, Carpenter each
drop pair at State Open
NEW HAVEN, Feb. 25 – The margin for error at the CIAC State Open is thin. Pomperaug coach Mike O’Keefe said. “You can’t let your guard down for a second. If you do, the good kids will capitalize.” Canton’s Heath Cotton (152) and Matt Carpenter (112) got some first-hand knowledge during the opening day of competition.
Cotton dropped a 1-0 decision to Bulkeley’s Ismael Nieves in the first round. In his first round consolation match, he had two opportunities to get back points but couldn’t convert in a 7-5 loss to Waterford’s Mike Gorton to end his tournament run. Nieves, who was 3-0 in one-point decisions in the tournament, eventually finished fourth. Cotton finished the year 27-5.
Carpenter (24-9) lost his first round match to Windham’s Carlos Cruz, 18-9 and just fell short in his opening consolation round bout in a 10-8 loss to Montville’s William Heller, 10-8.
MAT DUST: Long-time assistant coach Ed deSimas was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the NCCC in voting by the league coaches. Suffield's Chris Potter was named as head coach of the year.
Cotton, M. Carpenter
finish 3rd in Class S
UNCASVILLE, Conn., Feb. 19 – Senior Heath Cotton knew he was the underdog. But in the semifinals of Saturday’s Class S championship against Suffield’s Colby Johnstone, he rolled the dice. He went for big throws and big moves. He gave up 16 points before getting pinned.
But he didn’t falter. Cotton won his next two matches to finish third at 152 pounds. He outlasted Derby’s Mike Haskins, 10-7 and beat Plainville’s Jon Saucier, 6-1 in the consolation finals. A third period escape and takedown with 40 seconds clinched the victory.
“It was a tough weight class,” said Cotton (27-3). “I just gave it all I had. I had nothing to lose. But the farther I went, the more determined I got.”
At 112 pounds, senior Matt Carpenter also finished third thanks to a 6-2 victory over Suffield’s Shane Lewis in the consolation final. Carpenter (24-7) lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Tucker Grass of Morgan, 6-0. But Carpenter rebounded to beat St. Bernard’s Alex Deltgen by tech fall, 15-0 and then Lewis.
Canton finished 14th in the field with 63½ points. Cotton and Matt Carpenter qualified to wrestle in the State Open.
Nick Bristol (140) won two matches including a 7-5 decision over Thomaston’s Mike Clarizio in the consolation round and a 6-4 decision over Lyman Memorial’s Jared Scata in the second round.
Jason Watson (145) won three bouts, including two in the consolation round. Watson, seeded 16th, beat No. 9 Josh Miller of Windham Tech, 10-7 and No. 7 Justin Chapman of Thomaston, 6-2.

Nonnewaug pins Canton
in regular season finale
WOODBURY, Feb. 9 – Defending Class S champion Nonnewaug easily handled Canton with a 61-12 victory in the dual meet finale for the Warriors. The Chiefs (17-1) had eight pins. Heath Cotton (152) and Matt Carpenter (112) each had victories for Canton (8-15), which had also hoped to wrestle Holy Cross.
Canton coaches were frustrated that Holy Cross didn’t attend the meet, losing a chance to get a multi-meet in. Schools are limited to only a certain number of multi-meets and/or tournaments in a single season. But looking at schedules issued in December, it seems that Holy Cross had scheduled to host East Hartford on Wednesday and neglected to inform Canton officials of the schedule change.
This time, Warriors come out victorious on criteria
CANTON, Feb. 7 – Canton won its seventh bout of the year with a 43-42 NCCC decision over Stafford, winning on criteria. Addison Crowe (215), Greg Carpenter (112), Jason Watson (152) and Heath Cotton (160) had pins for Canton (1-6, 0-3) while Matt Charette earned a 7-2 decision.
Snow continues to keep Canton wrestlers off mat
CANTON, Jan. 12 – Early-morning snow cancelled school for the day forcing the postponement of the match with East Windsor. It was rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 13 but was moved to East Windsor because of a schedule conflict with the CHS gym.
