Watson moves up to 3rd in NCCC after wrestler declared ineligible
CANTON, March 14 – Canton’s Jasen Watson has been moved up to third place in the recent NCCC Tournament after a Somers wrestler was declared ineligible by the CIAC. Somers’ Tim Vallaro (152) beat Watson, 4-0, in the NCCC Tournament but Vallaro was declared ineligible after an investigation after the season found that he practiced with a non-CIAC team during the season.
So, Watson moves up to third and Somers loses all the points that Vallaro earned.
With the ineligibility ruling, Watson (26-15) picked up additional win.
Bristol rallies to take 3rd at Class S tourney
MONTVILLE, Feb. 18 -- In a lineup depleted by injuries and three wrestlers out with impetigo, a bacterial skin infection, Canton finished 19th at the Class S tournament at St. Bernard.
Senior Nick Bristol (140) had a fine tournament winning four matches in the consolation bracket to finish third and qualify for the State Open. Bristol (29-11, team-high 19 pins) lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Sean Fisher of Griswold but never lost again. In the consolation semifinals, Bristol outlasted NCCC champion Ryan Van Nostrand of Granby, the No. 2 seed, by a 9-5 score.
In the consolation final, Bristol trailed Portland’s Andy Dionne 7-2 after two periods. A two-point reversal and two-point near fall with 26 seconds left cut Dionne’s lead to one, 7-6. Bristol tried to turn Dionne again but couldn’t.
With five seconds left, he let Dionne escape on purpose and immediately took him down at time expired to tie the bout at 8-8 and send it into overtime. In OT, Bristol got a quick takedown for a 10-8 victory.
“I think (Dionne) thought he had the match in the bag,” Bristol said. “He wasn’t ready (when he escaped with 5 seconds left). That was my most intense match of the year.”
Mike Rossley (112) went 3-2 with three pins while Dana Nappi (145, 2-2), Bob Delvecchio (189, 2-2) and Lindsey Barth (275, 1-2) also won matches.
Canton earns seven medals at NCCC Tourney STAFFORD, Feb. 11 -- It was a challenging weekend for the Warriors. Junior Dan Rossley (152) was hurt in a one-vehicle accident Thursday after practice. He underwent surgery over the weekend and doctors expect him to be back on his feet in a few days.
But when Canton went to the NCCC Tournament on Saturday, Rossley’s prognosis was unknown. Sophomore Mike Rossley (112) missed the tournament to be with his brother and his family. And on the mat, senior Jose Oyola (135) dislocated his elbow in a consolation round to end his season.
“They did as well as they could,” Canton coach Bill Phelps said. “They came home with seven medals and I was pleased with that.” Nate Kempe (125), Nick Bristol (140), Dana Nappi (145) and Lindsay Barth (275) each finished third while Jasen Watson (152), Justin Ledbetter (160) and Bob Delvecchio (189) each finished fourth.
Avon clinched its second straight NCCC championship with a 45-point win over Suffield, 211-149. Canton was fifth, just two points behind fourth place East Windsor.
Oyola was leading 8-4 Avon’s Adam Twitchell with less than a minute left in regulation when he was injured. Twichell ended up third. On Wednesday, Oyola shut out Ellington’s Travis Caovette, 3-0 and Caovette ended up third at 130 pounds.
SOMERS, Feb. 8 – Canton (13-15, 2-5 NCCC) closed out the regular season with its fourth straight win by beating Somers, 53-23. Ryan Maglietti (119), Tim Murphy (140) and Justin Ledbetter (171) won by pin. Lindsey Barth (275) returned after missing a week with the flu to pick up one of four Somers forfeits. Barth was named athlete of the month by the Canton Athletic Booster Club in January for his 10 victories and six pins.
Showing heart, Canton is 3rd at Groundhog Duals
SOUTH WINDSOR, Feb. 4 – Despite having only two wrestlers in their normal weight classes due to illness and wrestlers being overweight, Canton was able to finish third in the Groundhog Duals thanks to a satisfying 40-39 win on criteria over Stafford, who had beaten the Warriors by 14 points just two days earlier.
Canton (12-15) prevailed in the consolation match of the event thanks to having more first takedowns. Against Stafford, the Warriors trailed 18-0 before winning seven of the next eight bouts with six pins. Canton also beat South Windsor, 48-33 and Lyman Memorial, 52-24. Against South Windsor, Canton erased a 24-point deficit by closing out the bout with wins in seven of the final eight bouts including six pins. The Warriors fell to Mt. Anthony, Vermont’s B team, 54-18.
Nick Bristol (145) went 4-0 at the Duals with 4 pins while Dana Nappi (152), Bob Delvecchio (189) and Mike Jones (130) were 3-1 with two pins. Jasen Watson (152) went 3-1 with three pins.
Big run lifts Stafford
STAFFORD, Feb. 2 – Missing two starters and forfeiting three weight classes didn’t help as Stafford outlased Canton, 41-27. Jasen Watson (160) and Dan Rossley (152) had pins for the Warriors (9-14, 1-5 NCCC) but it wasn’t enough. After Canton took a 9-0 lead, Stafford won seven of the next eight matches to seize control. Stephanie Lawler (125) made her season debut but got pinned. Rookie Jose Oyola (135) prevailed, 14-5 while Dana Nappi earned a tech fall decision. Ryan Maglietti (119) earned a 9-4 decision at 119.
Avon remains undefeated in NCCC with victory
AVON, Jan. 31 – Nick Bristol (140) earned a three-point victory while Mike Rossley (112) and Dana Nappi (145) had pins but Avon (22-3, 6-0 NCCC) rolled to a 55-21 victory. The Falcons move within one victory of an undefeated season. Canton (9-13, 1-4 NCCC) gave up 18 points in forfeits.
Oyola, Ledbetter, Barth win 3 matches each as Canton finishes sixth
ROCKVILLE, Jan. 28 – RHAM won three of the final four matches to overcome a eight-point deficit and beat Canton, 36-33 to finish fifth in the 8th annual John Williams Duals in Rockville. Three forfeits, one caused by a wrestler being overweight and another because a starter didn’t show up, hurt the Warriors.
Senior Jose Oyola (135) went 3-1 with three pins for Canton (9-12) while Justin Ledbetter (160) and Lindsay Barth were each 3-1 with two pins. Nick Bristol (145), Jasen Watson (152), Bob Delvecchio (189) and Mike Rossley (112) each had two wins. At 130, Mike Jones had a 5-4 win in triple OT against the JV All-Stars.
Canton was 1-3 on the day, losing to Windham, 68-12 thanks to 7 pins by the Whippets and 44-13 to Morgan. Canton beat the JV All-Stars, 46-36, giving away 24 points in forfeits. When East Catholic did not show up, junior varsity wrestlers from the 7 teams competed as the eighth team.
Canton earns first conference win of year
CANTON, Jan. 25 – Canton took a 27-point lead by winning the first five matches in a 49-24 victory over Enfield for their first NCCC victory of the season. Nate Kempe (125), Justin Ledbetter (160), Jasen Watson (152) and Alex Cabeceiras (171) had pins for Canton (8-9, 1-3) while Nick Bristol (140) won by technical fall.
Bristol, Barth each
finish 6th at Eagle Classic
MANCHESTER, Jan. 21 -- Nick Bristol (140 pounds) and Lindsay Barth (275) each finished sixth for Canton (7-9, 0-3 NCCC) at the Eagle Classic at East Catholic. Canton finished tied for 16th in the field of 21 teams. Chances to do better as a team faded when one varsity starter didn’t show up for the tournament and four others were overweight for their respective weight classes.
Bristol went 2-3 with two pins in the tournament. In his first consolation round contest, he fought off his back in the first period to pin Nonnewaug’s Andrew Harley just 12 seconds into the second period. Bristol hit a quick reversal and put Harley to his back. Bristol fell to Xavier’s Brian Mitchell, 5-2 in the bout for fifth place.
Barth also went 2-3. His most impressive win was a pin over Windham’s Jose Salano in 1:21. Justin Ledbetter (160), Bobby Delvecchio (189) and Tim Murphy (135) each won one match in the tournament.
Canton tops Gilbert but can't get past Derby
DERBY, Jan. 14 – Nick Bristol and Jason Watsen each won three times but Canton was only able to salvage one victory in a quad-meet Saturday. Canton beat Gilbert for the second time this year, 56-18 but they dropped a close match to host Derby, 45-36 and lost to Seymour, 45-27. Bristol improves to 12-2 at 140 and 145 while Watsen improves to 15-5 at 152 pounds. Junior rookie Bob Delvecchio (189) had two pins to improve to 10-4. Tim Murphy (135) had his seven-match win streak snapped in a loss against Derby.
Despite improvement, Canton falls to Suffield
SUFFIELD, Jan. 11 – Canton coach Bill Phelps sees the improvement every day. It always doesn’t show up in the boxscore but it is there. For the second time in five days, Suffield beat Canton, 42-26. On Saturday, the Warriors fell by a 48-23 score in the consolation final of the Northwestern Duals.
“It is really just experience on the mat,” Phelps said. On Saturday, junior rookie Bob Delvecchio (189) was pinned in less than two minutes. But on Wednesday, he pinned Suffield’s Pat Sullivan in 3:38. On Saturday, Mike Jones (130) was pinned by Dale Rollette. On Wednesday, Jones outlasted Eric Heaney, 9-5. “The main reason there is improvement is because there are 35 wrestlers in practice,” Phelps said. “Every day, they are wrestling hard and getting better because someone will take their spot if they don’t.”
At 152, Suffield’s Dale Shelanska led 4-0 after one period but Jason Watsen surged in the second period to tie the match at 8-8. Shelanska got a two-point near fall with 23 seconds left to earn a 10-8 victory. Tim Murphy (135) and Dana Nappi (145) also earned hard-fought decisions.
Canton takes fourth at Northwestern Duals
BARKHAMSTED, Jan. 7 – Canton went 3-2 and finished fourth at the Northwestern Regional Duals, falling to Suffield High, 48-23 in the consolation final. Justin Ledbetter (171) went 4-1 on the afternoon with three pins and a technical fall. Rookie Bob Delvecchio (189) went 4-1 with three pins while senior Lindsay Barth (275) continued his strong performances with three wins in five matches. Despite missing weight at 140 pounds, Nick Bristol went 4-0 while competing at 145.
Canton (6-6, 0-2 NCCC) won its first match with a dominating 52-17 win over Gilbert. Mike Jones (130) rallied from an 11-6 deficit in the final minute. Jones escaped, took down Gilbert’s Aaron Hester and turned him to his back for a 12-11 victory. Barth had a 10-7 win over Chris Shank while Tim Murphy (135), Bruce Nappi (140), Dan Leduc (160), Delvecchio (189) and Garret Kulik (215) each had pins.
In a 52-24 win over the defending Class S champion Northwestern, Canton had seven pins. Against St. Bernard, Canton build up leads of 27-0 and 33-6 but couldn’t hold on the victory. Jason Watson (152) beat Kevin Bentley on a takedown in overtime. Against Rocky Hill, Canton took advantage of seven forfeits in a 48-24 win. Ledbetter had a pin in 23 seconds.
Warriors top Thomaston, Windham Tech
CANTON, Dec. 27 – It was an impressive debut for two varsity newcomers and several veterans in a five-team meet at Canton High. The Warriors (3-3) beat Thomaston, 45-30, and Windham Tech, 66-15, but fell to Farmington, 55-18 and St. Bernard, 47-30.
Canton junior Bob Delvecchio (189) went 3-1 in his varsity debut while senior Jose Oyola (135) went 4-1, losing his only bout on an overtime takedown. Veterans Nick Bristol (145) went 3-1 with three pins while Jason Watson (152) went 4-1 with three pins. Other wrestlers who did well included Lindsay Barth (3-0 at 275), Garrett Kulik (3-1 at 215), Nate Haller (3-1, 2 pins at 130) and Mike Rossley (3-1, 3 pins, 112).
Granby rallies to slip past Canton at the finish
CANTON, Dec. 21 – The Warriors came close but couldn’t finish off Granby in a 43-32 defeat. Canton started off strong and led by 23 points, 29-6 after six weight classes. But the Bears rallied to win seven of the last eight bouts, four by pin. In a key bout at 145 pounds, Granby’s Ryan VanNorstand built a 7-1 lead after two periods but Nick Bristol put VanNortstand on his back in the final minute with a cradle but he couldn’t get the pin.
Mike Rossley (112), Ryan Maglietti (119), Nate Kempe (145) and Mike Jones (130) pinned for Canton (1-1, 0-1 NCCC).
Rossley takes 2nd as Canton finishes 8th
at Derby Invitational
DERBY, Dec. 17 – Mike Rossley had two pins and earned a spot in the finals at 112 pounds in the 16th annual Derby Invitational. But Derby’s Justin Parlow quickly pinned Rossley in 12 seconds as host Derby ended the three-year reign of Morgan by winning the tournament for the first time since 2002.
Canton finished eighth in the field. Rossley was the only Canton wrestler to make the finals. Jason Watson (152) and Mike Jones (135) each took third while Dana Nappi (145) was fourth. Jones was overweight for 130 but was able to perform well up a weight class. Nick Bristol (140) was overweight and sat out the afternoon.
Watson finished the day with three wins (all pins) while Jones had three wins and two pins. Jones won his third place bout in 54 seconds after his opponent was disqualified for locking hands twice and trying to throw a pair of full nelsons.
Canton tops Portland for season opening victory
PORTLAND, Dec. 15 – The Warriors erased an early 9-0 deficit with seven wins in the next eight matches to beat Portland, 52-28 in the season opener for both teams. Canton (1-0) had seven pins in the victory with Mike Rossley (112) having the fastest pin with a 16-second bout.
Numbers up for optimistic Warriors
CANTON, Dec. 4, 2005 -- The Warriors open the 34rd campaign in school history when they travel to Portland on Wednesday, Dec. 14. It will be the 15th time in the last 17 years that the two teams have opened the season against each other. Canton has won 11 of the last 15 season-opening contests over the Highlanders.
The Warriors were 8-15 a year ago and 3-4 in the league. They finished 14th in Class S. Senior Justin Ledbetter was 16-11 with 11 pins a year ago at 171 while senior Nick Bristol was 15-15 at 140 with 11 pins. Junior Jason Watson was 11-11 with 4 pins at 140.
Canton has the makings of a balanced squad that could be competitive in the NCCC. The numbers of wrestlers out for the team are up and Canton hopes to fill all 14 weight classes this year, a necessary component to be successful.
“This group has a lot of potential,” said long-time coach Bill Phelps. “If we can fill all of the weight classes, it is a huge advantage. We have some tough kids. They are willing to work and bust their chops.”
A majority of the team are freshmen and sophomores but many of those youngsters have been participating in youth wrestling programs for several years, including freshmen Justin Prosser and Dan Leduc.
Top-ranked Carpenter to focus on mountain biking
CANTON, Nov. 22 – Junior Greg Carpenter won’t be wrestling this season for the Warriors so he can focus on mountain bike racing. Carpenter, 20-19 in two seasons with 10 pins on the mat, is the No. 1 ranked mountain bike racer in the nation in the age 15-16 division.
Carpenter, 16, represented the U.S. in the Pan-Am Games in Mexico City in October and finished 15th out of 60 riders in the junior expert division (ages 17-18). The junior rides for Cannondale and generally races in the junior expert division. He has been invited to train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs next spring.
He’ll spend the winter training for the mountain bike season, which begins in March.
