Canton's Phelps steps away from wrestling
CANTON, March 18 -- It just seems like Canton High wrestling coach Bill Phelps has been around forever. But he hasn’t. For nearly 30 years, Phelps has been a fixture on the sidelines in Canton and in the valley. He has been there for a generation of athletes on and off the field.
Canton Wrestling Online, March 18: Phelps retires after 28 years as wrestling coach

Carpenter, Getler each get a win at State Open
NEW HAVEN, February 27 – Canton’s Steve Carpenter (125) and Nate Getler (135) both won their opening matches at the State Open but both were beaten in the quarterfinals and eliminated in separate one-point decisions. Carpenter pinned Platt’s Erik Franks in the first round in 3:37 but lost in the quarterfinals to Class L champion Ed Carroll of Hand, 9-5. Carroll advanced to the finals. Carpenter (39-5) was eliminated in his first consolation round bout by Newington’s Chris Chorzepa, 3-2.

Getler (38-6) pinned Waterford’s Zach Deer in his first bout in 1:42. In the quarterfinals, defending State Open champion Joe Sargenti of South Windsor pinned Getler in 2:44. Getler was eliminated in his first consolation round match by Avon’s James Gendler, 4-3.

Carpenter takes 2nd, Warriors finish 10th in Phelps' finale
HARTFORD, Feb. 20 -- Three Canton wrestlers finished in the top three of their respective weight classes in Saturday’s Class S championship to earn a trip to this weekend’s State Open tournament.

For the second straight year, the Warriors finished 10th, an impressive feat considering that Canton won just 10 matches with a lineup wracked with holes due to injuries, inexperience and a lack of wrestlers.

A smile was never far from coach Bill Phelps face during this tournament. Four wrestlers made the semifinals and senior Steven Carpenter (125 pounds) earned a spot in the championship match for the second time in three seasons.

Junior Nate Getler (130) finished third and Matt White (119) took fourth to earn a trip to the Open. After two closely-fought defeats, senior Rich Jones (160) won what may be his final scholastic match with a pin in 34 seconds to take fifth. He will be an alternate for the State Open.

At 130, Matt Grisevich was just one win shy of finishing in the top six and winning a medal.

Phelps received a standing ovation from the crowd prior to Carpenter’s final when it was announced that he was retiring after 28 seasons. Carpenter (38-3) won his first two bouts by decision and pinned East Catholic’s Scott Gonalez in 5:53 to earn a spot in the final. The match was back and forth with both wrestlers scoring points before Carpenter caught Gonalez and pinned him.

But in the final, Nonnewaug’s Tyler Tilbe was too strong in a 14-1 decision to win his second straight Class S title. “He was pretty strong,” Carpenter admitted. “I’ve lost three matches this year and two were to him. He has a lot of experience and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. He’s always moving.” Carpenter lost in the 103-pound final as a sophomore.

Getler (37-4) dropped a 6-3 decision to eventual champion Brandon Walsh of Griswold in the semifinals at 135 pounds. Getler battled through a 7-2 decision over Thomaston’s Kyle Oldham and dominated Stafford’s Evan Frassinelli, 11-3 to finish third.

Getler is still struggling in the effects of injuring his leg about 13 months ago during a match, including nerve damage in the leg. “By all rights, he shouldn’t even be out there but he has worked very hard to get back,” said Phelps, who said 135 may be the toughest in Class S. “He’s a tough kid.”

At 160, Jones trailed Ansonia’s Nick O’Connor by two points with 55 seconds left after a two-point reversal. But O’Connor’s takedown with 36 seconds left boosted him to a 10-5 victory. Jones (41-4) dropped a 7-2 decision to Nonnewaug’s D.J. Hardisty in the consolation semifinals but rebounded by pinning Weston’s Lucas Romaldini in 34 seconds.

White (119) lost to Housatonic’s Dom Ghi in the consolation final, 7-3.

With five NCCC champions, Canton surges into third
GRANBY, Feb. 13 -- For Canton (10-21, 2-5 NCCC), the sting of a frustrating dual meet season was eased a bit by the outstanding performance from five individual champions at the NCCC Tournament.

Senior Stephen Carpenter (125) won his second NCCC championship while senior Rich Jones (160) and sophomore Matt White (119) won for second straight year. Senior Matt Grisevich (130) and junior Nate Getler (135) each won for the first time.

Canton had five wrestlers in the finals. All five won to lift Canton to a third place finish in the tournament with 125 points, just ahead of Stafford with 120.5. Avon won the overall tournament and league title.

“I thought it was outstanding,” outgoing head coach Bill Phelps said. “I was very pleased. They never faltered, especially in the finals.”

Carpenter (35-2) wasn’t challenged much in the tournament and won with a 6-0 win over Stafford’s Allen Yang. Jones (38-2) had a dominating 6-0 win over Avon’s Ryan Pearson in the finals and pin in the semifinals to add to his team-leading total of 28.

White (27-4) had three pins including a 1:08 pin of Stafford’s Roshan Rehman in the final.
Getler (34-3) prevailed in one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament.

Three of the top four wrestlers were undefeated in the league. Getler stopped Stafford’s Evan Frassinelli 4-1 in the semifinals and outlasted Avon’s James Gendler, 8-4 in the championship match.
“I think he was in the toughest weight class in the tournament,” Phelps said.

Grisevich (30-7) had two pins in the tournament. He won a title by beating Avon’s Eric Remigno, 9-2.

Canton wins three, including emotional win over Granby
SOUTH WINDSOR, Feb. 6 -- With his wrestling coaching career now down to a matter of days, Canton High mentor Bill Phelps saw his Warriors pick up three victories last week. In his final home match before many former wrestlers, parents and friends, the Warriors beat Granby, 54-28.

On the weekend, they picked up another two victories at the Groundhog Duals in South Windsor by beating Portland, 43-33 and Lyman Memorial, 64-12. The Warriors (10-20, 2-4 NCCC) nearly beat Rockville in a 43-38 loss and dropped a 60-18 decision to South Windsor.

The win over Granby was an emotional one for the team and Phelps, who was honored in the final home match of his 27-year career. Many former wrestlers and their parents were among the crowd who were treated to a brief slide show of Phelps coaching the Warriors throughout the years and words of congratulations from his long-time assistant coach Ed deSimas.

“Seeing all of those kids. That was the most touching moment,” Phelps said. “The letters and notes that I’ve received from kids and the parents was great. That is what meant more to me. It’s not about the wins and losses. It’s about the friendships we’ve made along the way.”

Thanks to five forfeits in the first eight weight classes, Canton took command early against Granby. Nate Getler (140 pounds) and Chris Giesselman (103) had pins for the Warriors while Matt Grisevich (135) earned a 12-2 decision.

At the Groundhog Duals, the Warriors went 2-2 but Matt White (119) and Steve Carpenter (125) and Rich Jones (160) each went 4-0. Carpenter (31-2) had three pins and a technical fall while White (23-4) had three pins.

Jones, who has a team-high 35 wins in 37 matches, had two pins. His 27 pins are four shy of the single-season school record of 31 set by Kacy O’Connor nearly a decade ago.
Getler (135) went 3-1 to improve to 30-3 on the year. His only loss was to defending State Open champion Joe Sargenti of South Windsor, 8-1. Grisevich (130) went 3-1 to improve to 26-7.

With 4 wins, Jones earns his 30th victory
ROCKVILLE, Jan. 30 – Senior Rich Jones (160) had three pins and a tech fall on Saturday at the John Williams Duals at Rockville High to improve this record to a team-best 30-2. Canton finished seventh in the eight-team event with a 42-30 victory over Morgan in the final bout of the afternoon.

Steve Carpenter (125) went 3-0 with two pins and a two-point victory over RHAM’s Willie Giarde to improve to 26-2. Nate Getler (135) had four wins with two pins, a forfeit and a decision, raising his record to 26-2 on the year. Matt Grisevich (130) won two of his three matches on the day to improve to 22-6.

Canton (7-18) forfeited six of 14 weight classes due to illness and lack of wresters. The Warriors fell to RHAM, 56-11, Windham High, 66-16 and Stratford, 56-24 in the pool portion of the tournament that was won by RHAM. Three Canton wrestlers had their Stratford opponents on their back but couldn’t finish and eventually lost their bouts.

Short-handed Warriors fall to Avon
AVON, January 27 – Short on bodies due to illnesses, the Warriors gave up 30 points before the first match began thanks to five forfeits in a 54-29 loss to defending NCCC champion Avon. On the mat, Canton actually outscored the Falcons, 29-24 with four pins and a tech fall. Rich Jones (160) earned his team-leading 26th win but he had to work for it. Avon’s Ryan Pearson got the first two takedowns of the match to take a 4-1 lead. Late in the first period, Pearson turned Jones to take a 8-3 lead. But Jones (26-2) rallied to tie the match at 8-8 and pin Pearson in 2:18.

Steve Carpenter (125) improved to 23-2 with a first period pin while Nate Getler (135) improved to 22-2 with a pin in less than a minute. Matt Grisevich (130) also had a pin and raised his record to 20-5. The Warriors (6-15, 1-4 NCCC) actually had an 18-0 lead after three matches but forfeited five of the final 11 bouts. Matt White (119) won by technical fall to raise his record to 18-2. Avon improved to 16-4 on the year and 5-0 in the league.

Jones is 3rd, Getler takes fourth
Canton finishes
10th at Eagle Classic
MANCHESTER, Jan. 23 -- Five Canton wrestlers advanced to the semifinals at the 16th annual Eagle Classic tournament in Manchester Saturday. But each were stopped as the Warriors finished 10th in the competitive field that included three teams receiving votes in the state coaches poll and long-time Vermont state champion Mt. Anthony of Bennington.

Junior Nate Getler (135, 21-2) finished fourth, falling in triple OT, 2-1 in the consolation final to Berlin’s Will Matuszak. Senior Rich Jones (160, 25-2) finished tied for third because his opponent Evan Allard of South Windsor had already wrestled five times and was ineligible to compete again. Jones actually pinned Allard earlier in the tournament in 3:03. State rules allow athletes to compete in just five matches a day.

Getler easily won his quarterfinal match before getting defeated for the first time this year by Mt. Anthony’s Ben Price by a pin in 3:35 in the semifinals. Getler won his first consolation round bout to earn a spot in the third place bout against Matuszak.

Getler took a 1-0 lead thanks to a second period escape. That was nearly good enough but Getler was penalized one point for stalling with about five seconds left in regulation, sending the match into overtime. In the first OT, Getler had Matuszak sitting down on his bottom but couldn’t finish the takedown. In the third OT, Matuszak was able to earn the decisive point by riding Getler for 30 seconds and not allowing him to score a point.

After pinning Allard in his first match, Jones stumbled in overtime against St. Paul’s Chris Bachand. The match was tied 6-6 after two periods. Bachand got the winning takedown in OT to advance to the final. Jones picked up a consolation round victory but since Allard had wrestled five matches in one day, the two wrestlers shared third place.

Stephen Carpenter (125, 22-2), Matt White (103, 17-2) and Matt Grisevich (130, 19-5) also advanced to the semifinals. Carpenter, who was 2-2 on the day, lost to Nonnewaug’s Tyler Tilbe, 8-1. It was Carpenter's first loss of the season. Tilbe barely lost in the final, 3-2 to Windham’s Miquel Calixto. White was pinned by Mt. Anthony’s Chris Schramm in 5:15 while Grisevich dropped a 5-0 decision to eventual champion Casey Mitchell of South Windsor.

Raiders prevail on criteria
CANTON, Jan. 20 -- Canton (6-14, 1-3 NCCC) dropped a 38-37 decision to Enfield on criteria. The two teams tied at 37-37 after 14 matches but Enfield earned the victory for scoring first in five of the nine matches that were actually held.

Carpenter, Getler remain undefeated
WINSTED, Jan. 16 -- Canton was undermanned with eight wrestlers out of the lineup on Saturday morning for a four-team meet at Gilbert. Three were sick or injured, two were at a family funeral and three had religious commitments. Canton (6-13, 1-2 NCCC) fielded a team of just eight wrestlers, giving up six forfeits (30 points) in each match. The Warriors fell to Seymour (45-15), Derby (54-24) and Gilbert (46-24).

Steve Carpenter (125) went 3-0 with two pins to remain undefeated at 19-0. He has 12 pins on the season. Junior Nate Getler (135) also won a pair of matches to remain undefeated (17-0).

Junior Matt White (119) lost his first match of the season, dropping a 6-4 decision to Seymour’s Carlos Vidal, giving up a two-point reversal in the final five seconds. White (13-1) finished the day with another two pins.
Senior Rich Jones (160) lost his first match of the season in a 9-4 loss to Ansonia’s Nick O’Connor. Jones got behind 4-1 in the first period and couldn’t catch up. Jones (22-1, 18 pins) had two more pins to finish the afternoon.

Canton comes close but Stafford prevails
STAFFORD, Jan. 13 -- Just four days after dropping a 27-point decision to Stafford in a non-league match, Canton went toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs last week in a NCCC match. Each team forfeited two weight classes leaving 10 weight classes to decide the match. Both teams won five matches each, four by pin.

The difference in Stafford’s 40-39 victory was the Bulldogs earning four points with a nine-point decision at 145 pounds as Stafford’s Ethan Pace outdueled Peter Leduc, 17-6, while Canton earned just three with a six-point victory at 140 pounds. Canton’s Nate Getler remained undefeated with a 10-4 decision over a tough Evan Frazzenelli but couldn’t get two points and earn four points for the decision.

Matt White (119), Steve Carpenter (125), Matt Grisevich (130) and Greg Cole (160) had pins for the Warriors.

Four wrestlers remain undefeated
BARKHAMSTED, Jan. 9 – Giving up three forfeits (18 points) in each match made Saturday’s Northwestern Duals a challenge for the Warriors, who went 1-3. Canton earned a 48-36 win over Rocky Hill with Peter LeDuc (140) picking up a key victory. LeDuc was trailing by four points, 7-3, before he got a reversal and eventually pinned Jason Mosher.

Canton takes home
3 titles from Derby Invitational
DERBY, Dec. 19 – Three Canton High wrestlers brought home championship titles from the 20th annual Derby Invitational on Saturday to help the Warriors finish fourth. It’s the most champions for the Warriors since 2003 and the best team finish in the tournament since CHS finished third in 2004.

Sophomore Matt White (119), junior Nate Getler (135) and senior Rich Jones (160) won titles while Matt Grisevich (130) dropped a one-point decision to finish second. Due to the forecasted snow, the tournament was reduced to a single elimination tournament and there were no consolation round bouts.

White won his second scholastic tournament with a dominating performance. He won his first two matches in pin (23 seconds, 1:23) and outlasted Branford’s Bobby O’Neill in the final, 14-6.

Getler, coming off a severe knee injury last January, won the Derby Invitational for the second straight year. Getler had a bye in the quarterfinals and built a five-point lead over Tyler Bison of Lyman Hall, who made Getler work for a 10-4 semifinal victory. In the final, Getler won by injury default over Derby’s Kevin Raines.

Jones had three pins in an outstanding tournament to win his second high school tournament. He won by pin in 37 seconds in the quarterfinals and in the semifinals, he was taken down but he quickly got a reversal and won by pin in 39 seconds. In the final, Jones pinned Morgan’s Kyle Bly in 1:49.

In the finals at 130, Grisevich led Gilbert’s Alex Smith by two points with about a minute left in the match before Smith got a takedown and near fall to take control. Grisevich escaped with about 10 seconds left but couldn’t get a takedown in a 7-6 defeat.

Canton wrestled with 11 wrestlers. They had no wrestlers at 112, 125 or 152 pounds. Derby won the tournament for the fourth straight year.

Canton News, Dec. 24: Warriors finish fourth at Derby Tournament

Warriors win 8 of 10 bouts on mat to outlast Portland
CANTON, Dec. 16 – The Warriors were outnumbered on Wednesday night in their traditional season opening match with Portland. Due to injuries and lack of wrestlers, Canton forfeited four weight classes, giving up 24 points. But Canton won eight of the remaining 10 weight classes with five pins to earn a 44-36 victory.

It was close at the end. Canton had a 41-36 lead going into the final match and a pin by the visitors would have given Portland the victory. And the Highlanders’ John Clarke had Peter LeDuc on his back. But LeDuc wrestled tough and prevailed with a 13-10 victory to clinch the victory for Canton.

Chris Gisselman (103) earned a pin in his varsity debut for the Warriors while Rich Jones (160), Brian Fitzpatrick (112) and Nate Getler (140) also had pins. Matt Grisevich (130) won by tech fall in just 2:51. The big pin of the match came from Matt Graziano at 171 pounds over Jon Palenga in 3:42. Graziano couldn’t get down to 152 pounds so he weighed in at 160 and wrestled at 171 pounds.

2010 preview
Solid veterans fill lineup for Warriors
CANTON, Dec. 13 -- Canton (20-11, 6-1 NCCC) finished second in the league behind Avon a year ago. It was the best record for the Warriors since 2002. This year, Canton has a small team of just 19 wrestlers but coach Bill Phelps, in his 28th and final season behind the bench, hopes his team can make some noise in the league and perhaps in Class S.

Canton returns senior Steven Carpenter (125/130), who has placed in the top six of the Class S tournament the last two years and won a NCCC title as a sophomore. Senior Rich Jones (160/171) and sophomore Matt White (119) each won NCCC titles a year ago.

Sophomore Brian Fitzpatrick (112), senior Matt Grisevich (130/135) and sophomore Peter Leduc (145/152) each finished in the top three in the NCCC tournament and return. Senior Cole Murphy (285) finished third in the NCCC a year ago but is out of action for now with a football injury.

Junior Nate Getler (135/140), who was 29-2 a year ago before tearing up his knee in a match last January, is back on the mat.

“This is a real good group coming back,” said Phelps, who is 12 wins shy of 300 for his career. “This could be a strong group.”

The challenge will be for new contributors to fill in the gaps in the lineup and for Canton to field a full lineup of 14 wrestlers and not forfeit any weight classes.
