Leach picks up a win at State Open
NEW HAVEN, Feb. 28 – Senior Brandon Leach (140) was the only Canton wrestler to pick up a win at the State Open. Leach pinned Mausk’s Ryan Kuska, who finished fourth in Class LL, in 3:00 in the first round of the consolation round before he was eliminated in a 13-0 loss to Pomperaug’s Reese Denu. Leach (1-2) lost to Westhill’s Z. Napalitano in the first round, 15-2.

At 171, Nate Haller went 0-2, getting pinned by Class L champion Sean O’Connell of Farmington in 58 seconds and losing to Xavier’s Dan Thompson by pin in 2:32. Rich Jones (160) didn’t wrestle due to the flu and Matt White (103) was overweight.

Canton returns to top 10 in Class S
UNCASVILLE, Feb. 21 -- It’s been a while since the Canton High wrestling team was among the top 10 teams in the Class S tournament. In an 11-year stretch from 1992 to 2002, the Warriors finished in the top 10 nine times. With four medalists, the Warriors finished 10th in the CIAC Class S wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Senior Brandon Leach finished third at 140 pounds while freshman Matt White (103), junior Rich Jones (160) and Haller (171) each finished fourth. All four qualified to compete at this week’s State Open championships. Junior Steve Carpenter finished sixth at 125.

Leach (38-11) is ending his scholastic career on a high note, prevailing in several close matches. “He wrestled like a senior with enthusiasm and class,” Canton coach Bill Phelps said. “He knew what he wanted to do and how to get it.”

Leach earned a close 4-3 victory over Terryville’s Nick Roy in his first bout before getting pinned by Somers’ David Chokas in the quarterfinals. In the consolation round, Leach won four straight matches to finish third, including a 4-2 decision over Old Saybrook’s Frank Navarro. Three of Leach’s four consolation bracket wins were by just two points.

At 171, Haller had a pair of pins before losing to defending State Open champion Tim Vollaro, 14-3, in the semifinals. He beat Thomaston’s Mark Dilley in the consolation semifinals, 15-8 but was pinned by Gilbert’s Tore Lovetre to finish fourth.

White advanced to the semifinals before dropping a 15-5 decision to eventual champion Alan Sanford of Thomaston. A pin put White in the consolation final but Griswold’s Ron Allen built a 5-2 lead and hung on for the win. A White reversal with 45 seconds left cut the lead to one but White couldn’t turn Allen for another point.

At 160, Jones made some mistakes that eventual champion Sam Schwartz of Housatonic took advantage of in a 15-5 semifinal loss. After winning by technical fall in the consolation semifinal, Jones dropped a 6-5 decision to St. Paul’s Chris Bachand to finish fourth. Jones trailed 6-2 after two periods. He escaped early in the third period to cut the lead to three but Bachand was able to hold Jones at bay for most of the period, giving up a two-point takedown in the final five seconds.

Carpenter lost several close matches. He dropped a 5-3 match to Nonnewaug’s Tyler Tilbe in the semifinals, a 8-7 loss to Stafford’s Allen Yang in the consolation semifinals and a 2-0 loss to Derby’s Vincent Delprete to finish sixth.

White, Jones win NCCC crowns
CANTON, Feb. 14 – Despite missing four starters, the Warriors (20-11, 6-1 NCCC) crowned two league champions and placed four wrestlers in the finals of the 2009 NCCC Tournament Saturday in Canton. With nine wrestlers in the finals and seven champions, Avon ran away with the title with 232 points followed by Somers (155) and Canton (133). The Warriors finished second overall in the league.

Freshman Matt White (103) and junior Rich Jones (140) won NCCC titles. White won with a 9-3 decision over Avon’s Jason Lybeck while Jones, who battled a tooth infection all week, earned a bit of revenge with a 10-4 win over Avon’s Mike Hogan. Earlier in the year, Hogan beat Jones, 13-8.

Steven Carpenter (119) and Nate Haller (189) finishing second. Matt Grisevich (125) and Sean Delany (215) each finished third while Brian Fitzpatruck (112), Peter LeDuc (130), Brandon Leach (145), Cole Murphy (285) each finished fourth.

Carpenter trailed by six points after two periods but couldn’t make it up in a 8-5 loss to Somers’ Dan Piscottano. Haller took a chance and moved up to 189 pounds. Despite giving up 23 pounds, he had two pins before getting beat in the finals by Avon’s Brian Haynes in 3:16.

Leach also took a chance by moving up to 145 to try and score more points for the squad. Canton was missing four starters. Nate Getler (135) hurt his knee last week, Greg Cole (171) broke a finger on Friday in practice, Anthony Santago (140) has injured ribs and Nate Scull (152) is still feeling the effects of being slammed to the mat in early January.

Head coach Bill Phelps was named coach of the year for the first time in balloting by league coaches while assistant coach Ed deSimas was named NCCC assistant coach of the year for the third time in the last five years.

Crucial wins give Canton 1-point win over Somers
CANTON, Feb. 5 – Nate Haller (189) and Rich Jones (160) had two key pins, Matt Grisevich (130) had a crucial major decision and Brandon Leach (140) lost by just a decision as the Warriors came away with a big 40-39 win over a hard-nosed Somers squad Thursday. The win lifts Canton (16-9, 5-1 NCCC) in a second place tie in the NCCC with Somers (19-6, 5-1).

Haller and Jones each won by pin and Grisevich not only won by he won by nine points to pick up a crucial extra point. Leach had a tough bout at 140 pounds but he stayed off his back and gave up only three points instead of six for getting pinned. Steve Carpenter moved up a weight class had a key pin at 125 pounds as well. Haller was 22 pounds lighter than his opponent but ended up with the pin.

“The kids came up big tonight,” Canton assistant coach Ed deSimas said. The only low note for the Warriors was the knee injury to Nate Getler (29-2) at 135 pounds. He was hurt during the match and went to the hospital after the match for treatment.

It’s the first time that Canton has won at least five matches in the league since 2002.

Canton beats Windham for first time, takes 5th
VERNON, Jan. 31 – In a challenging tournament, the Warriors (15-9, 4-1 NCCC) wrestled well and finished fifth at the John Williams Duals in Rockville.

Canton came close to beating Rockville but fell, 42-37. Plainville dominated the Warriors in a 55-21 defeat before Canton rallied to beat undermanned Morgan-Clinton, 62-18.

In the fifth place bout, Canton beat Windham High for the first time ever with a 43-42 decision on criteria. The two teams actually tied at 42-42 but Canton earned the tiebreaker point and the victory for having more near fall points.

On Thursday, Canton snapped a five-match losing streak against Granby with a 48-33 victory. It was the first win over the Bears since 2002.

White takes third at Eagle Classic
MANCHESTER, Jan. 24 – Matt White went 3-1 to finish third at 103 pounds and highlight Canton’s top 10 finish at the 15th annual Eagle Classic tournament at East Catholic. White beat Berlin’s Don Cirullo twice in the tournament, earning a 13-4 decision in the quarterfinals and a 8-3 decision in the consolation final.

White lost to eventual champion Tyler Keane of Glastonbury in the semifinals, 12-0. White also beat South Windsor’s Hunter Rich by tech fall.

Nate Getler (135) dropped his first match of the year in a 6-5 semifinal loss to Berlin’s Roger Moss, who caught Getler in a cradle and took a 5-0 lead in the first period. In the second period, Getler had a pair of takedowns and an escape to cut the lead to 6-5. But Moss was able to ride out Getler in the third period.

Getler pinned East Windsor’s Mike Musanti in 1:09 and beat Newington’s Kyle Nunez, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Brandon Leach (140) won a pair of matches including one by pin in 14 seconds before dropping a 14-5 semifinal decision to eventual champion Justin Roncioli of Berlin. No other Canton wrestler won more than one match. Steven Carpenter (119) missed the tournament after getting hurt during gym class earlier in the week.

Canton's 10th place finish was its best since taking fifth in 2002.

Mistakes hurt in loss to Falcons
CANTON, Jan. 21 –Canton made several mistakes on the mat and Avon was more than happy to make the Warriors pay in a 59-12 loss. Several Canton wrestlers turned to their backs and got pinned. Some let their Avon opponents control the match by controlling the hands and wrists. One Canton wrestler had his opponent on his back but couldn’t pin him. He later got pinned.

“I’m disappointed,” Canton coach Bill Phelps said. “Avon is tough. They graduated a lot of kids but they all worked hard over the summer. They have more experience than we do but it should have been closer than it was.” The Falcons (14-1, 4-0 NCCC) had eight pins and won six of the first seven matches.

Canton (12-7, 3-1 NCCC) was missing three starters. Nate Scull (160) is out after suffering a concussion two weeks ago against Gilbert. Stephen Carpenter (119) got hurt in gym class on Tuesday and Ben Miner (152) is being slowed by a bad back. However, that didn’t make a difference in the outcome.

Canton’s Nate Getler (135) remained undefeated (22-0) with a pin of Robert Davies. At 140, Avon’s Matt Silver took advantage when Brandon Leach turned to his back and pinned him with eight seconds left in the first period. At 160, Avon’s Mike Hogan handed Canton’s Rich Jones just his second loss of the year, 13-8. Jones threw Hogan to his back in the final 10 seconds but there wasn’t enough time to get a pin.

The closest bout of the night was at 171 pounds with Canton’s Nate Haller outlasting Avon’s David Wyrick, 5-4. Haller rode out the third period and Wyrick escaped but not until the buzzer had sounded ending the match.

“We’ve had a good start this year,” Phelps said referring to wins in 11 of their first 15 matches. “We still have a long way to go. We need to be wrestling better for the Class S tournament. And we can do it. We can wrestle better.”
Collinsville Press, Jan. 21: Avon cashes in on Canton mistakes

Tough day of
hard-nosed wrestling for CHS
CANTON, Jan. 17 -- In three tough matches, the Warriors (12-6) won just once but it was still a satisfying effort, despite missing four starters. Canton scored 30 points offer Derby (14-2) and beat Seymour for the first time ever. “It wasn’t an easy day for anybody,” Canton assistant coach Ed deSimas said. “Derby came out 3-0 but they had to do their work. There were no easy matches."

Rich Jones (160) and Nate Getler (135) each finished 3-0 on the afternoon. Jones improved to 20-1 while Getler remained undefeated at 21-0. Nate Scull (152) was out with an injury after getting slammed to the mat last weekend against Gilbert, Ben Miner (160) was competing in a national gymnastics competition and Sean Delany (215) was ill. The other missing starter was skiing.

“We lost a few (individual) matches by a point because we let our guard down. I hope the boys will learn from that,”  deSimas said. Against Derby, Canton's Matt White (103) dropped a 10-9 decision to Matt Poppa, who hit reversal with two seconds left. Steve Carpenter (119) dropped a 3-2 decision to Vincent Delprete, who controlled Carpenter for the entire third period. At 215, Mike Frazier was tied with Derby’s Jesse Gilbert at 9-9 before he got caught in a move and pinned.

In a 51-21 loss to Gilbert, the Yellowjackets won six of the first seven matches to take a commanding 33-4 lead. Gilbert’s Ross Lopardo (171) outlasted Nate Haller, 2-1. For Canton, Getler outlasted Tony Decato in a hard-fought 13-2 decision while Brandon Leach (140) outlasted Eric Parsons, 4-3. Carpenter (119) had a pin in 15 seconds.

Canton won the first six matches against Seymour to take a 33-0 lead with pins from Leach, Anthony Santiago (152), Greg Coles (171) and Nate Haller (189). Jones earned a 9-5 decision over Bill O’Donnell, erasing a four-point deficit after one period. Carpenter and Getler each earned a pair of hard-fought 9-2 decisions.

Dominating win over Enfield gives Canton its 11th win
ENFIELD, Jan. 14 – Canton is off to its best start in eight years since 2001 after its dominating 68-12 victory over Enfield High on Wednesday night. The Warriors improve to 11-4 and 3-0 in the NCCC. Canton is tied for first place in the league with Avon (10-0, 3-0) and Somers (15-4, 3-0).

The Warriors had seven pins in match, including four in the first four bouts to take a commanding 24-0 lead. Nate Getler (140) remained undefeated with a hard-fought 12-5 decision over Ryan Peterson. Canton beat the Raiders for the eighth straight year in the most lopsided Canton victory in the series.

With four wins, Canton earns spot in NW Duals final
BARKHAMSTED, Jan. 10 -- Canton earned a spot in the championship match of a dual meet tournament for the first time since 1995 at the Northwestern Regional Duals. The Warriors (10-4, 2-0 NCCC) won four bouts

Canton wrestled tough to win four matches in Pool A and make the finals. Victories over Morgan (65-15) and Rocky Hill (66-15) weren’t too difficult. But Canton had to wrestle well to beat St. Bernard’s, 37-34 and had to rally to put away pesky Wolcott Tech, 43-33.

Against St. Bernard, the Warriors trailed nearly the entire match but won four of the last five matches to earn the victory. Steve Carpenter (119) gave Canton a 17-16 lead with a pin but St. Bernard won the next two bouts to take a 28-17 lead with five left in the match.

Nate Getler (135) won with a 33 second pin but another pin gave St. Bernard a 34-23 lead. Canton’s Brandon Leach (140) prevailed in a tough 10-6 victory over Jordan Merrill and senior Nate Scull (145) followed with a huge 4-2 victory over John Turgeon to decide the match. Scull trailed 2-1 after two periods. But in the third period, he earned an escape and a sharp double-leg takedown with 50 seconds remaining. He rode out Turgeon for the victory.

Wolcott Tech took an 18-6 lead with three pins in the first four matches before Canton rallied with five wins in the next six matches for a 32-24 lead. But Tech was tough and led 33-30 with two matches left. But Rich Jones (160) pinned Jared Marshall in 26 seconds and Nate Haller (171) picked up a forfeit to clinch the match.

In the finals against Gilbert, Canton cut the lead to six twice but Gilbert (10-0) responded with victories each time to pull away. The last time Canton made a dual meet final was in 1995, losing to Gilbert in the championship bout of the Canton Duals and Gilbert Duals.

Getler won five times to improve to 16-0 on the year with four pins and a tech fall. Carpenter had five pins, three in less than a minute. Haller finished the day with four wins.

Canton tops Stafford for sixth victory
CANTON, Jan. 8 -- With eight pins, Canton beat Stafford for the fourth time in five years with a 57-24 victory. The Warriors had five pins in the first seven matches to take a commanding 30-12 lead. The meet was delayed one day due to school being cancelled on Wednesday due to icing.

Canton rallies to beat
E.O. Smith, top NW
THOMASTON, Dec. 30 -- Canton earned an impressive victory over E.O. Smith-Storrs in the first-ever match between the two schools, 45-29 and beat Northwestern Regional, 43-36 in a five-team meet. Canton (5-3) fell to Thomaston, 66-12 and Farmington, 54-23.

The E.O. Smith victory was impressive considering that the Panthers upset Thomaston, one of the top teams in Class S, earlier in the day, 45-34. Canton won four of the final five bouts to beat E.O. Smith. Steve Carpenter (119) beat Jesse Lusa, 8-2 to give Canton a 27-24 lead. After a loss at 125 pounds that gave the Panthers a 29-27 edge, Canton’s Peter LeDuc (130), Nate Getler (135) and Brandon Leach (140) closed out the match with pins.

Against Northwestern, Canton had three pins and took advantage of four Regional forfeits to earn the 42-36 win. By filling 12 of 14 weight classes, the Warriors are earning crucial points that they couldn’t get in previous campaigns.

Brandon Leach (140), Nate Getler (135) and Cole Murphy (285) had pins against Farmington while Rich Jones (160) earned a win by technical fall. Getler, now 11-0, also had a pin against Thomaston. Jones improved to 7-1 while Leach improved to 9-2. "We showed that we can do all right," assistant coach Ed deSimas said. "We hope we can hold our own against good teams."

Canton earns split to improve to 3-1
WOODBURY, Dec. 27 – The Warriors rallied from a six-point deficit after seven matches and came up with pins in three of the next four matches to pull away from Old Saybrook/Westbrook in a 37-31 victory on Saturday. Old Saybrook won three of the first four matches to take a 13-6 lead before Nate Getler (140) blanked Frank Navarro, 9-0 and senior Brendan Leach (145) beat David Skau, 5-1 to tie the match at 13-13.

The Rams got a pin at 152 before Rich Jones (160), Nate Haller (171) and Sean Delany (215) came up with pins. Greg Cole received a forfeit at 189 to give Canton a commanding 37-19 lead. It was the first-ever meeting with Old Saybrook (0-3), competing in its first varsity season.

Nonnewaug (5-1) handed Canton (3-1) its first loss of the season by winning seven matches and receiving four forfeits in a 57-15 decision. Tyler Tilbe (125) had a close 6-5 victory over Stephen Carpenter. Brandon Leach (145) won by pin and Nate Haller (171) earned a 7-0 decision for the Warriors. Nate Getler (135) won by forfeit.

Warriors top Suffield
SUFFIELD, Dec. 23 – Canton (2-0, 1-0 NCCC) had four pins, a tech fall and took advantage of four Suffield forfeits to roll to a 58-18 NCCC victory in the league opener for both schools on Tuesday night. Rich Jones (160), Sean Deleany (215), Steve Carpenter (119) and Ben Miner (152) each had pins for Canton while Matt Grishevich (125) won by tech fall.

Getler wins title as Canton takes fourth
DERBY, Dec. 20 – Sophomore Nate Getler outlasted Derby’s Linbert Cousley in the championship match at 140 pounds to win at the 19th annual Derby Invitational Saturday. Getler, who earned a 4-0 decision in the final, sparked Canton’s fourth place finish as the Warriors had six wrestlers earn medals.

Junior Steve Carpenter (119) and Brandon Leach (140) each finished second while Matt White (112) and Nate Haller (171) each took third. Matt Grishevich (125) took fourth place.

With three champions and seven finalists, Derby won their own Derby Invitational for the fourth straight year and eighth time in 19 years.

Warriors top Portland in season opening victory
PORTLAND, Dec. 17 – With four pins and five forfeits from Portland, the Warriors opened the 2008-09 campaign with a strong 54-27 victory over the Highlanders. Nate Getler (135), Brandon Leach (140), Rich Jones (171) and Steve Carpenter (119) won by pin.
