Wrestlers compete at State Open
GLASTONBURY, March 1 -- Josh Bristol (130) and Kelvin Valencia (215) each participated in the State Open. Valenica (1-2) earned the team's only win, pinning Plainville's Justin Fangiullo in the consolation round. Bristol wrestled tough but went 0-2. David Brummert (103) chose not to compete. Lewis Mills' Greg Hom (130) got in as an alternate and went 0-2.

Brummert takes third in Class S
COLCHESTER, Feb. 22 -- Senior David Brummert gave up a takedown in the final seconds of his semifinal match and never made it to the Class S finals at 103. But Brummert rebounded to finished third and qualify for next week's State Open championships. Brummert throttled Morgan's Tucker Glass, 13-2 to take 3rd.

Josh Bristol (130) and Kelvin Valencia (215) each finished fourth and qualified for the State Open. Canton finished 12th. in the tournament. Lewis Mills' Greg Hom took fifth at 130.

Valencia wins NCCC crown
ENFIELD, Feb. 15 -- Kelvin Valencia (215) pinned Avon's Lou Shavell in 2:34 to win his first NCCC Tournament championship. The Warriors finished third in the tournament and ended up fourth in the league. David Brummert lost a tough OT match in the 103-pound final to Avon's Sebby Lara, 7-5, while Josh Bristol (130), Anthony Daniels (135) and Rory Parker (275) each finished second. Pat Collier (160) was third for Canton.

CHS is 7th in GroundHog Duals
SOUTH WINDSOR, Feb. 8 -- Canton finished seventh at the GroundHog Duals thanks to wins over Lyman Memorial, 48-30 and Portland, 45-27. The Warriors dropped their first two matches, losing to Mt. Anthony (Vt.) B by a 49-24 score and losing to South Windsor on criteria. Thanks to pins from Rory Parker (275), David Brummert (103), Nick Bristol (112) and Matt Charette (119), Canton rallied to tie the match at 42-42 but South Windsor prevailed on criteria, most near falls (9-2).

Brummert went 4-0 on the day with three pins along with Anthony Daniels (135), who had two pins and two forfeits. Josh Bristol (130) and Matt Charette (119) each had three wins. Brian Phelps hurt his knee against Portland and is out for the remainder of the season.

Brummert takes 2nd at Silk City
MANCHESTER, Jan. 25 -- David Brummert (103) finished second in the Silk City Classic Saturday, falling to undefeated freshman Joey Martin of Simsbury as Canton finished 16th in the tournament. Brummert did earn some tight wins with an 8-7 win over Kyle McAlees of South Windsor in the quarterfinals and a 10-7 win over Rockville's Mike Longo in the semifinals. Kelvin Valencia took sixth at 215 pounds, falling to New Milford's Jamie Hines, 7-6. Matt Carpenter (95) finished sixth at 95 pounds.

Warriors top Gilbert, Granby
WINSTED, Jan. 18 -- Josh Bristol won three times, once with a 2-point decision over Gilbert's John Berger, a pin and a forfeit as Canton won 2 of 3 matches.

The Warriors (6-7, 4-1) won their fourth NCCC match with a 55-24 win over Granby. Canton also beat Gilbert, 54-17, but fell to Derby, 51-29.  Bristol (130), Anthony Daniels (135) and Brian Phelps (119) earned pins against defending Class S champion Derby while David Brummert (103) earned a major decision. Kelvin Velencia won 2 of three matches, including an 11-10 win over Granby's James Cody.

Lewis Mills' Greg Hom (125) made his varsity debut, going 2-1 on the weekend.

Another home match
CANTON, Jan. 9 -- Housatonic has been added to the home schedule. The Mountaineers will visit CHS for a 6 p.m. match on Thursday, Jan. 30.
The site for the NCCC Tournament  on Feb. 15 has been moved to Enfield.

Canton tops Enfield
CANTON, Jan. 9 -- The Warriors (4-5, 3-1) received four pints from Josh Lacomb (171), Anthony Daniels (130), John Rossley (145) and Dan Kilduff (160) and took advantage of four Enfield forfeits to beat the Raiders, 54-29. Daniels had the fastest pin of the match in 31 seconds.

Falcons, Rocky Hill tops CHS
AVON, Jan. 4, 2003 -- Anthony Daniels (135 pounds) won a pair of matches to improve to 9-2 on the season but Avon and Rocky Hill swept matches from Canton (3-5, 2-1 NCCC). Nick Bristol (112) also won a pair of matches, including one by pin in 16 seconds. Avon's win snapped Canton's 10-match NCCC winning streak.

David Brummert (103) improved to 10-1 on the season with 8 pins and a tech fall. Daniels (9-2) has five pins while Rory Parker (275) improved to 7-2 with five pins.

Bristol, Brummert sweep three bouts
CANTON, Dec. 28 -- Josh Bristol (125) and David Brummert (103) each won three matches but the Warriors dropped 2 of 3 matches, falling to Montville and Farmington. Canton (3-3) salvaged the day with its fifth straight win over Gilbert. Bristol had three pins while Brummert had two pins and a forfeit. Brummert had a 17 second pin against Montville. ... Farmington beat Canton for the first time since 1992.

CHS wins 10th straight league match
SUFFIELD, Dec. 27 -- Canton won its 10th straight NCCC league match with a pair of wins over Suffield and Somers Friday. Canton (2-1, 2-0 NCCC) beat Somers, 66-18 and Suffield, 54-23. Tri-captain David Brummert (103) had a pair of pins and improved to 6-0 on the season while tri-captain Anthony Daniels (130) had a pin and tech fall and also improved to 6-0. Rory Parker (275) improved to 5-0 win a pin and a forfeit. It was the first dual meet against Somers since 1998.

Three win titles at Derby
DERBY, Dec. 21 -- David Brummert (103), Anthony Daniels (130) and Rory Parker (275) each won titles at the annual Derby Invitational as Canton finished fourth in the field of eight teams. Brian Phelps (119) finished second at 119 while Nick Bristol was third at 112.

Daniels won his title with a takedown at the buzzer to earn a 14-13 decision over Alejanco Marinan of Morgan. Trailing by 1 with 5 seconds to go, Daniels escaped and sank a double leg takedown for the win. Daniels had 4 takedowns and 6 escapes in the match including 2 takedowns in the third period. Marinan had 5 takedowns and 3 escapes.

Portland 47, Canton 29
CANTON, Dec. 19 -- For only the third time in the last 11 meetings, the Highlanders topped Canton in the season opener for both teams. Anthony Daniels (125) and Will Hatch (152) won by pins for CHS while David Brummert won by technical fall.

Season opens Dec. 19
CANTON -- The Warriors open the 31st campaign in school history when they host Portland on Thursday, Dec. 19 at the CHS gym at 6 p.m. It will be the 12th time in the last 14 years that the two teams have opened the season against each other. Canton has won 10 of the 12 season-opening contests over the Highlanders.
