UConn mourns Szychowski
Carpenter, Rossley win a match at Open
NEW HAVEN, Feb. 23, 2008 -- Canton’s Stephen Carpenter (103) and Mike Rossley (119) each went 1-2 at the State Open. Carpenter won his opening match pinning Danbury’s Brian Jennings in 5:10 before falling to eventual champion R.J. LaBeef, the undefeated freshman from Woodstock Academy, 7-1 in the quarterfinals.

“In his first match, Stephen was very good, moving around well,” Canton coach Bill Phelps said. “In his second match, I think we was worried about not losing and you can’t win that way here. In his third match, he didn’t want to get caught and didn’t have his usual throws.” Carpenter was eliminated by Bacon Academy’s Nick Dodge, 7-4.

Rossley dropped his first round bout to Farmington’s Luke Walsh by technical fall, 15-0 but rallied to pin Newtown’s Dana VanBuskirk in 3:09. Rossley was eliminated in a 7-0 loss to Conard’s Roberto Solano. “In his second match, (Rossley) had nothing to lose and he went for everything,” Phelps said. “I think he surprised the kid, too. In the third match, he went for the Peterson twice but didn’t throw it with conviction.”

Rossley had finished fifth in Class S at 119 but got a chance to participate when the fourth place finisher from Stafford hurt his shoulder. Only the top four wrestlers in each weight class are invited to participate.

Program earns 300th win
CANTON – The Warriors earned their 300th win as a program at the Ground Hog Duals on February 2 with a 54-16 win over Stafford. Canton came into the year 11 wins shy of 300 and went 13-16 this season for 302 wins in team history. Canton is the 20th team in state history known to have surpassed 300 wins.

2008 Class S tournament results

Carpenter takes 2nd in Class S
UNCASVILLE, Conn., Feb. 16, 2008 -- Sophomore Stephen Carpenter was four minutes away from becoming the 17th wrestler in school history to capture a state championship. But those four minutes were long and Carpenter’s opponent, Rich Wood of St. Bernard, made them count.

Carpenter led 2-0 after one period in the championship match at 103 pounds in the Class S wrestling tournament but Wood scored the final seven points of the match to deny Carpenter with a 7-2 victory.

Wood started the second period on the bottom with Carpenter in control but he earned a two-point reversal with about a minute left in the period and caught Carpenter’s arm. It was enough to pull him to the mat and get a three-point near fall and seize control of the match.

While the ending was disappointing, the overall performance was not. Carpenter (39-4) rolled into the championship bout with three wins and two pins, including a pin of Windham Tech’s Kyle Parrilla in the semifinals. By taking second, Carpenter qualifies to wrestle in this weekend’s State Open tournament where he will be seeded eighth in the field of 16 participants.

Carpenter’s performance led the Warriors to a 13th place finish in the Class S tournament – its best performance since taking 11th place six years ago in 2002. Canton (13-16, 4-3 NCCC) also two other wrestlers bring home medals.

Senior Mike Rossley (119) won three of his four consolation bracket bouts to finish fifth. Freshman Nate Getler (125) advanced to the semifinals before being defeated by two-time Class S champion Jake Miller of East Windsor. Getler (31-8) also finished fifth.

Rossley gutted out a one-point decision over Andrew Duncan of Thomaston, 9-8, in his first consolation round match and beat Anthony Delprete of Derby, 6-2. Getler’s most impressive win was a 6-0 win over No. 4 seed Eddie Loomis of Killingly in the quarterfinals. Senior Mike Jones (145, 23-9) went 3-2 in his final tournament while senior Dana Nappi (152, 27-7) went 2-2.

Warriors finish fourth at NCCC Tournament
SOMERS, Feb. 9 -- As the days have passed and the opportunities to compete have disappeared, a sense of urgency has begun to reappear among the Canton High wrestling team. The Warriors are more focused and aware that the end of the season is approaching.

Canton went 7-3 in its final 10 matches to finish 13-16 overall and with a winning record in the league (4-3) for the first time since 2004. At Saturday’s NCCC Tournament, the Warriors finished third for its best showing since 2004, when they finished fourth. Avon beat Granby by nearly 34 points to win the tournament and clinch its fourth league championship in the last five years.

Canton placed four wrestlers in the finals for the first time since 2003 and came away with two champions.

Sophomore Steven Carpenter (103) won his first NCCC championship with a dominant 10-0 victory over Avon’s Conner Douglas. Carpenter, the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s Class S tournament at 103, had little trouble in the tournament and improved to 36-3 on the year.

At 140 pounds, junior Brandon Leach pinned Ellington’s Travis Coauette in 3:18 to win his first league championship and avenge an earlier loss. A month ago, Coauette pinned Leach in the third period.
In Saturday’s championship bout, it was scoreless in the second period when Coauette escaped leaving both wrestlers on their feet. Leach threw a headlock, tossed Coauette to his back and pinned him for the victory.

Leach’s path to the championship wasn’t easy, either. In the semifinals, he had to beat Avon’s Brendan Gobell for the third time this year. Two weeks ago, Leach (25-11) prevailed by a 2-1 score at the Rockville Duals. On Saturday, Leach was much more aggressive in a 10-1 victory.

Freshman Nate Getler (125) and senior Ryan Maglietti (135) each finished second for Canton. Getler lost 14-3 to defending Class S champion Jake Miller of East Windsor, who was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler. Maglietti (135), who has been troubled with an dislocated finger all season, dropped a 8-3 decision to Avon’s Mike Defeo in the final.

Senior Mike Jones (145) and sophomore Rich Jones (152) each finished third while junior Nate Haller (160) took fourth. Mike Jones trailed Suffield’s Kane Seaha in the consolation final by six points but scored seven points including a two-point near fall with five seconds left to win, 8-7.

Rich Jones normally wrestles at 160 but moved down and had three pins to take third.

Getler is seeded fifth at 125 at this weekend’s Class S tournament at St. Bernard-Uncasville while Rich Jones (22-10, 160) and Leach (25-11, 140) are each seeded seventh. Senior Dana Nappi (25-5, 152) is seeded third in the Class S meet. Nappi did not compete in the NCCC tournament due to a prior commitment.

The Warriors won their final dual meet of the season last week with a 54-24 win over Suffield High. Carpenter, Matt Grishivich (112), Getler and Rich Jones each had pins.

Canton finishes
4th at Ground Hog
SOUTH WINDSOR, Feb. 2 -- Canton (12-16) went 3-1 and finished fourth in the Ground Hog Duals in South Windsor on Saturday.

The Warriors swept all six matches that were held and received another three forfeits in a 55-24 win over Portland. The Warriors had three pins, a pair of tech falls and a 10-9 decision by Dana Nappi at 171. Against Stafford, there were only three matches and Canton won two by pin in 54-16 victory that saw Canton receive seven forfeits. In a 54-30 win over Lyman Memorial, Canton won three of four matches with three pins. The Warriors received six forfeits.

Canton finally faced an opponent with a full squad when they tangled with No. 8 Bristol Central and did quite well. The Warriors forfeited four weight classes and gave up 24 points. In the 10 bouts actually held, Canton won five and outscored the undefeated Rams, 25-24. Rich Jones (171) and Stephen Carpenter (103) each won by pin while freshman Nate Getler (125) had an impressive, hard-fought 6-1 victory over Colin Lombardi. Brandon Leach (145) won by injury default and Mike Jones (152) earned a major decision.

Canton earns 9th win
EAST WINDSOR, Jan. 30 – The Warriors (9-15, 3-3 NCCC) won four of the five matches contested on the mat by pin in a 60-12 victory over a depleted East Windsor squad, which had only six wrestlers. Forest Haller (130), Ryan Maglietti (135), Mike Jones (145) and Steven Carpenter (103) each won by pin. Canton freshman Nate Getler (125) missed the meet due to an illness.

Canton takes fourth at Williams Duals
CANTON, Jan. 27 -- The Warriors went 2-3 last week, finishing fourth at the 10th annual John Williams Duals in Rockville on Saturday with a 48-18 loss to Avon. It was the first time since 2002 that Canton (8-15, 2-3 NCCC) won at least two matches in the tournament and advanced to the consolation final.

Pins from Mike Jones (145), Dana Nappi (152), Rich Jones (160), Nate Getler (125) and Brandon Leach (140) helped the Warriors beat Rockville, 47-33. In a 45-26 win over Plainville, the Warriors had nine victories including five pins. Mike Jones, Leach, Nappi, Stephen Carpenter (103) and Zach Olstead (189) each had three wins on the day

In its opening match of the tournament, Canton faced its first top 10 opponent in years. No. 5 New Milford won 10 matches in a 63-6 victory. Olstead (189) pinned New Milford’s Brian Richman in 1:03 and Carpenter dropped a tight 6-5 decision at 103 to Nick Amorando. Rich Jones (160) also dropped a close 6-4 decision to Steve Owens. New Milford (22-1) won the event for the first time with a 54-22 win over No. 10 Southington.

Earlier last week, Somers won six of the final eight matches to earn a 42-29 win over Canton in a NCCC match. Ryan Maglietti (135) earned a 5-1 decision over David Chokas and Rich Jones (160) outlasted Somers’ Matt Hoff, 10-6. The Warriors also received 24 points in forfeits.

Three Canton wrestlers rally in consolation round
MANCHESTER, Jan. 19 -- Given a second chance, three Canton wrestlers did well at the 14th annual Eagle Classic Saturday in Manchester. Sophomore Stephen Carpenter (103) lost in the quarterfinals in overtime, 6-4, to Killingly’s Tom Lombardi. But Carpenter wrestled well through the consolation round with four straight wins to finish third.

Carpenter finished third with a 4-0 win over Lombardi that got a bit heated at the end of the first period. Lombardi used an illegal move to hold down Carpenter, slipped behind him for a two-point takedown.

But when coach Bill Phelps protested to the referee, he agreed, took away the takedown and awarded Carpenter a penalty point. Instead of entering the second period down 2-0, Carpenter led 1-0. A reversal gave him a 3-0 lead. Carpenter also had a tight 5-4 decision over Glastonbury’s Ben Sharon in the consolation round.

At 140 pounds, junior Brandon Leach dropped his first match to RHAM’s Chris Wargo, 8-1. But Leach rallied to win three straight consolation round matches, including two by pin before dropping a back-and-forth 11-9 decision in overtime to Woodstock Academy’s Michael Bove in the consolation semifinals.

Trailing by one in the third period, Leach got a two-point reversal and a two-point near fall for an 8-5 lead. A Bove reversal with 38 seconds left cut the lead to one, 8-7. Bove let Leach escape with 14 seconds remaining and got a takedown with two seconds left to force OT where he got the winning takedown. Leach finished tied for fifth with Wargo.

Sophomore Rich Jones (160) pinned Alex Prague of South Windsor in his opening match in 4:20 but was pinned by eventual champion John Fiorill of Berlin in 2:39. Jones went 1-1 in the consolation round.

Canton (6-12, 2-2 NCCC) finished 16th in the field of 19 teams.

Former Canton wrestler dies at 23
CANTON, Jan. 14 – Former Canton High wrestler Adam Szychowski died on Friday, January 11. He graduated from Canton in 2002 and was a senior at the University of Connecticut in Storrs working toward a double major in Anthropology and Economics.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 2-5:30 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home in Canton with a funeral to follow at 5:30 p.m. Click on this link for a full obituary and a link to leave an online condolence.

At Canton, Szychowski wrestled for three years from 2000-02, going 74-28 with 55 pins. As a senior, he was 33-9 and third in Class S at 215 pounds. As a junior, he was 29-9 and won a NCCC Tournament championship at 215. He owns the record for the fastest pin in school history with a six-second pin of Portland’s Henry Klick in 2001. It’s also the fastest pin in state history at 215 pounds.

He was a senior on the 2002 Canton team set a school record for most wins (22) in a season. Wednesday night's match against Granby was moved to Thursday at CHS beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Stiff competition this week for CHS
CANTON, Jan. 13 -- Canton (6-11, 2-1 NCCC) is going through a rough stretch where the competition is stiff but the Warriors are still trying to gather experience that will benefit them once they reach the NCCC and Class S tournaments in February.

Canton will wrestle at the Eagle Classic this weekend in Manchester, one of the top tournaments in the state that will feature long-time New England contender Mt. Anthony, Vt., and top Connecticut squads such as Berlin, Bristol Eastern, Windham High, Killingly and Glastonbury.

Canton dropped a 52-22 decision to Avon last week with Stephen Carpenter (103), Brandon Leach (140) and Dana Nappi (152) each winning by pin. Freshman Nate Getler (125) earned an 8-0 decision. The Warriors also dropped matches to Derby, 50-19, Gilbert, 43-33 and Seymour, 39-37.

Warriors have six wins after 3 weeks
CANTON, Jan. 6 -- The Canton High wrestling team has some lofty goals this winter considering they won only five of 31 dual meets a year ago. The Warriors are aiming to win 50 percent of their dual meets and place eight wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight classes at the Class S tournament.

“That’s a big goal for us,” long-time coach Bill Phelps said. “We need to keep more kids around and as individuals get better. We want to be prepared for the best.”

Injuries have sapped some strength from the Canton lineup along with wrestlers who are inconsistent in their attendance. Canton has been forfeiting three to four weight classes in recent matches, worth 18 to 24 points.

But there have been signs of success. Canton is 6-7 and 2-0 in the league after three weeks.

Although they finished seventh in last week’s Northwestern Duals, they were in contention in the matches they lost. They beat runner-up St. Bernard-Montville, 44-36 before losing to East Catholic on criteria, 37-36. Canton dropped a close match to Suffield, 42-36 and Rocky Hill, 39-35 before beating Wolcott Tech, 54-24.

Senior captains Mike Rossley (119) and Dana Nappi (152) lead the squad. Both finished third at the Derby Invitational in December. A year ago, Nappi was the first Canton wrestler since 2004 to win a NCCC championship.

A year ago, sophomore Stephen Carpenter won over 30 matches at 103, despite weighing about 90 pounds. This year, he has grown, is stronger and is wrestling well. He finished second at the Derby Invitational at 112 pounds.

Senior Mike Jones (145), junior Brandon Leach (145) and sophomore Rich Jones (160) are other veterans returning for Canton.

Freshmen Nate Getler (125) and Nate Scott (171) have been impressive in their varsity debuts. Both bring several years of youth wrestling experience with them.

Canton has four medalists at Derby Invitational
DERBY, Dec. 15 – Canton opened its 36th varsity season with a seventh place finish at the Derby Invitational on Saturday. Four Warriors earned medals, led by sophomore Stephen Carpenter, who finished second at 112 pounds.

Mike Rossley (119) and Dana Nappi (152) each finished third while Rich Jones (171) finished fourth. With two champions and seven finalists, Derby won the tournament for the third straight year and for the sixth time in the last nine years.

Carpenter had a big lead in the finals against Housatonic’s Ben Arel but was caught in a move and pinned. Rossley, a senior, pinned Lyman Memorial’s Jake Alderman to take third. Nappi outlasted Derby’s Justin Grabarz, 13-6 to finish third.

The season opening dual meet at Portland was postponed indefinitely due to snow. The Warriors face NCCC rival Stafford on Wednesday night.

'08 schedule
