Bristol earns a win at State Open
NEW HAVEN, Feb. 28 -- Josh Bristol (130) earned the only victory for Canton at the State Open with an 8-6 win over Farmington's Matt Hancock in the consolation rounds. Bristol dropped a 12-5 decision to New Milford's Pete Stefanatos, 12-5, in the first round of the tournament. Jonathan Law's Nick Newell eliminated Bristol with a 7-5 decision.
Kelvin Valencia (215) went 0-2 in the tournament, getting caught trying to attempt a throw by East Hartford's Chris Brown, who won by pin in 40 seconds in the first round. In the consolation bracket, Valencia dropped a 3-2 decision to Maloney's Willy Brown. Lewis Mills' Greg Hom (135) went 0-2 in the tournament, getting pinned twice.
Valencia nips Venn, 7-6 for title, Bristol takes 2nd, Hom is 4th
PLAINVILLE, Feb. 21 -- There was a little over a minute left in the 2004 Class S finals at 215 pounds and Granby's Nick Venn held a 6-5 lead after Canton's Kelvin Valencia (215) was hit with a one-point stalling penalty. That spurred the senior into action.
Valencia tied the bout with an escape with 50 seconds left and immediately attacked Venn with a takedown attempt. Ten seconds later, Valencia scored on a two-point takedown and controlled Venn the rest of the way to become the 14th wrestler in school history to win a state championship with a 7-6 victory.
Senior Josh Bristol threw a scare into Northwestern's Joel Webster in the 130-pound final by putting Webster to his back and scoring near fall points. But Webster still prevailed with a 20-9 victory for his second straight Class S title.
Lewis Mills senior Greg Hom lost an emotional semifinal to rival Alex Gibson of Nonnewaug and ended up fourth. Hom fell in the consolation final to Terryville's Jared Griffin, 8-5. Valencia, Bristol and Hom each qualified for the State Open next weekend at Hillhouse. Canton finished 16th in the tournament
Valencia, Bristol claim conference titles
SUFFIELD, Feb. 14 -- Kelvin Valencia avenged a one-point loss earlier this week by beating Granby's Nick Venn and capture his second straight NCCC championship with a 6-4 victory in the finals of the 215-pound weight class at the NCCC Tournament. Avon won the tournament over Granby, 182-145 but the Bears claimed the league championship.
Josh Bristol (135) and Heath Cotton (145) each won an NCCC championship while Matt Carpenter (103) and Justin Ledbetter (160) finished third. Lindsay Barth (275) and Matt Charette (103) each took fourth.
Granby tops Canton in home finale, Warriors beat Holy Cross
CANTON, Feb. 11 -- Granby completed an undefeated dual meet season in the NCCC with a 45-20 win over Canton in the home finale for the Warriors. Canton (12-14, 5-2 NCCC) lost several close bouts. Granby's Chris Nadeau began the match by beating Heath Cotton (145) with a takedown in OT, 6-4. At 215, Granby's Nick Venn escaped with 17 seconds left in the third period to beat Kelvin Valencia, 5-4 while Granby's Nick Watson (130) slipped by Tim Murphy, 6-4.
Canton had a 30-18 lead against Nonnewaug but the Chiefs rallied to win five of the six remaining bouts to earn a 45-35 victory. Canton finished off the evening with a 53-30 win over Holy Cross. Josh Bristol (135) and Justin Ledbetter (160) each had three wins.
Bus troubles keep Canton home
SOUTH WINDSOR, Feb. 7 -- Canton was supposed to participate in the Groundhog Duals in South Windsor but transportation problems kept the Warriors home. The bus company that the town of Canton uses decided on Friday that the roads would be unsafe on Saturday due to a forecasted winter storm. Thus, there was no bus available to bring CHS to the meet. Canton concludes the regular season with a home meet against Nonnewaug and Granby on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
Hom takes second in the BL
WOODBURY, Feb. 7 -- Lewis Mills' Greg Hom, who was voted as one of the team captains by the Canton squad, finished second in the Berkshire League Tournament at 135 pounds. Hom fell in the finals to Nonnewaug's Alex Gibson, 4-2, thanks to a takedown with 27 seconds left in the match.
Gibson, who had been pinned by Hom at the Silk City Classic in January, got three single leg takedown attempts in the match but couldn't finish and earn the points. Hom took a 2-1 lead with a reversal with 1:17 left in the third period but Gibson escaped with 44 seconds left to tie the bout at 2-2. Again, Gibson swooped in and got a single leg but this time, he lifted Hom off the mat and took him down for the winning takedown.
"It's not the shot in the first period that wins it," Nonnewaug coach Dave Green said. "But it sets up the takedown that does win it in the third period. You just can't start shooting in the third period."
Making weight helps Canton beat Enfield and win 5th league bout
CANTON, Feb. 4 -- The key aspect of Canton's win over Enfield came an hour before the bout by the Warriors simply making weight and filling weight classes. Canton (11-12, 5-1 NCCC) kept its hopes alive for a possible NCCC championship with a 42-36 win over the Raiders. Canton took advantage of seven forfeits to take a 54-24 victory. Kelvin Valencia (215) and Josh Bristol (130) won on the mat with pins. Canton can force a three-way tie for the NCCC lead by beating Granby (13-2, 6-0) on Wednesday in Canton. The league tournament is Feb. 14.

Canton (3-8, 0-1 NCCC) was hurt by two wrestlers that didn't show up for action. Even with everyone in attendance, Canton forfeits three weight classes (18 points) each match. Heath Cotton is currently 9-2 for Canton while Josh Bristol is currently 10-4.
Lewis Mills senior Greg Hom (135/140) had a pair of pins, including a 23 second pin against Rocky Hill's Jeff Zevallos to improve to 12-1.
Six forfeits doom Canton
WINSTED, Dec. 27 -- It was a disappointing day for the CHS wrestlers on and off the mat. Canton (1-4) dropped four bouts to Farmington, Lyman Memorial and Gilbert, helped in part by forfeiting six weight classes (36 points) in each match. Some Warrior grapplers were hurt but some never showed up for the Saturday match. "I'm embarrassed for the Canton program," assistant coach Ed deSimas said. "There are some guys that care here."
Gilbert snapped a six-match losing streak and beat Canton for the first time since 1996 with a 48-30 victory. In actual competition on the mat, Canton outscored Gilbert, 24-18. Farmington scored the most points it has ever scored against CHS in a 61-15 win while Lyman snapped a seven-match losing streak dating back to 1998 with its 48-21 victory.

Valencia, Cotton win titles at Derby Tournament
DERBY, Dec. 20 -- Senior Kelvin Valencia didn't plan to spend his Saturday wrestling in the 14th annual Derby Invitational. He planned to take the SAT test but when it was cancelled, he got down to the tournament. But he found himself three pounds overweight for 215 pounds.
No problem. Valencia, weighing 218 pounds, moved up to 275 and easily won the tournament championship with three pins, including a pin of Derby's Tom Mizzou in the finals in just 39 seconds. He won his two other matches in 58 and 24 seconds. Valencia's pin of Mizzou lifted Canton to a third place finish in the tournament, which was won by Morgan for the second straight year.
Junior Heath Cotton (145) had a dominating performance in winning a title with three pins. He pinned Coventry's Mike Cumerford in the finals in 1:10 to improve to 4-0. Cotton upset top seed John Berger of Gilbert in the semifinals, pinning him in 2:35 and had an 18 second pin in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Greg Carpenter finished fourth at 103 while senior Josh Bristol was second at 135 pounds. Lewis Mills' senior Greg Hom, who trains with Canton, easily won a championship at 140, pinning Morgan's Brandon Marcarz in 47 seconds. Hom (4-0) had three pins of 38 seconds, 1:56 and 47 seconds.
